The I Ching is considered to be one of the most well known forms of inspirational and uplifting documents ever written. As an ancient Chinese text, it is regarded as one of the five Confucian classics, and with that connotation receives many praises. During its earlier years, students of Confucian mysticism used it as a reference for their studies, as well as recognized scholars looking to receive more insight from its text.
The first I Ching document found was a partial representation of the work on bamboo. As it was incomplete, the true meaning could not be fully represented through this finding alone. As such, further insight revealed that the document was likely written during the Warring States period in China. Today, it is symbolic of ancient Chinese thought on the human experience.
The birth of the document is said to have come from the supernatural visitations received by Fu Xi, who manifested them into a written form. As the Shang dynasty came into power over China many years later, the writing had undergone a transformation in its organization, by offering each stanza, or hexagram, its own individual meaning.
As the work was studied, modern researchers found that ancient scholars used the I Ching as a divination work used to inspire students of Confucius. As it was considered to be one of his five classic works, scholars were eager to introduce its inspirational and divine properties to students.
The text is written with stanza-like paragraphs called hexagrams. An individual hexagram has six lines, representative of either Yin or Yang principals. The entire document contains sixty-four hexagrams.
Yang is known by the Chinese as the "creative" aspect. Yin, its counterpart, is the "receptive" principal. These can be further deduced to have male and female connotations, further exemplifying their opposite. The "Yin Yang" symbol that is known in the west is symbolic of the complementary aspects these two opposites hold.
In essence, the I Ching is a philosophical work that complemented the studies of Confucian scholars. It provided both observations and statements in regards to divination and the cosmos, as well as human nature and energy in general. It is regarded as one of the five Confucian classics, as such, it holds much importance and wisdom within it, showcasing the power of thought and human emotions.
