Lampun is close to Chiang Mai and Lampang in Northern Thailand. Lampun is on the Ping river that is an ancient trading route for the flowers into Chiang Mai and further south into the country. Lampun is a picturesque place with huge flower laden sprawling valleys which are technically the foothills towards the Himalayas since they have exactly the same tectonic plate. Lampun is only 15 miles away from Chiang Mai.

In the late 1100's this part of the Mon empire fell to the Lannas until eventually it was taken over by the Burmese for two centuries. Thailand was finally created by a cooperation of numerous provincial leaders and the Burmese were eventually expelled from Thailand altogether.

Festivals

The most notable festival to find out in Lampun is the Longan Fair in which floats adorned with flowers are used to celebrate the harvest of the Longan fruit (which happens to be similar to a lychee). Females partake in customary dances and males will put floral garlands around their necks in appreciation of their dance.

Where to Visit

There are many temples in Lampun that are worth to check out. The most popular temple is the Wat Phra That Hariphunchai which was built in the 15th century by The King of Chiang Mai. Lampun is renowned for its wood carvings and ornaments featuring the cultural festivities of the historic Lanna Kingdom of Chiang Mai.

To go to Lampun coming from Bangkok you can ride on the overnight train to Chiang Mai and then take a coach. On the other hand you may go to Chiang Rai that is a lot closer but there are bad bus connections to Lampun. Buses are often local buses with no air-conditioning and stop too frequently.

One more location to visit is the Ko Samui Flower and Butterfly garden that is at Laem Natien and it is around the south-eastern coast of Ko Samui close to the Central Samui Village resort and in close proximity to the Aquarium. This tropical park features literally thousands of butterflies as well as plant species that are indigenous to Thailand. There is also an observatory overlooking the coast, and the garden can organize tours of the nearby coral reefs in Ko Samui.

The butterflies and plants are kept under big and tall nets to hold the butterflies in, also offering shade which is much needed for most of the types of plants as well as to help keep the tourists away from the sun. Numerous photographers come to these gardens, you can often find Japanese and Korean enthusiasts playing with their macro lenses – snapping up a little of nature's beauty to bring home along with them.
