Arabica and Robusta beans are the two main coffees grown throughout the world. The Arabica bean is normally thought of as the superior bean but it is the Robutsa espresso beans which gives the authentic espresso coffee its strong flavour. The recommendation would be to select coffee which have around 15% Robusta beans content.

You will find essentially four formats of coffee for espresso makers the kind you select will be based on your selected machine, budget, taste and convenience.

Pre-prepared ground coffee

Using pre-prepared ground coffee has several advantages: it's convenient, most coffee makers are compatible and there are a few good premium ground coffees in the marketplace today including Starbucks and Coffee Direct. Ground coffee is compatible with most coffee makers and allows you to choose the exact amount you want so you can brew to your tastes without the headache of needing to first grind the beans.

Espresso beans

There's no doubt that bean-to-cup coffee gives you the freshest and most superior espresso and is the only choice for true espresso aficionados. Not all coffee machines are suitable for espresso beans so it could be necessary depending on whether the coffeemaker is automatic or semi automatic whether or not you should utilize a separate coffee grinder. If you are using a bean-to-cup machine then the grinder is built-in. It is recommended that you select beans with around 15% Robusta for a better crema and intense flavour and from 'single estates' to get a purer flavour.

Capsules

Espresso coffee capsules are sealed pots of ground coffee that when put in the espresso maker are pierced and hot water is forced through to make the espresso. They are convenient and can because they are hermatically sealed stay fresh for up to nine months so if you're a really occasional espresso drinker these may be the perfect solution. One capsule will do for just one shot of coffee. Capsules are machine specific with the exception of the Caffitaly espresso machine that allows coffee capsules from other manufactures to be used. The trade-off of using coffee capsules is the fact that it must be the costliest method of making espresso coffee.

Pods (ESE)

The Easy Serving Espresso (ESE) pods are pads of pre-compacted ground coffee (approximately 7g) wrapped in filter paper that can be inserted straight into a compatible espresso maker. They are extremely convenient but do check that your espresso machine is compatible. Pods remove the messy coffee preparation but do be warned that it probably doubles the price of each coffee shot.
