When you go to a bike store today, you would find an amazing array of bicycles all over the place. If you are a novice buyer, you d probably feel confused just at their plain sight. There are thin tires, flat tires, drop handlebars, flat handlebars, lounge chair saddles, skinny ones name it and you ll have it. In this article, you ll learn about the evolution of bikes and how they were initially designed. This way, you ll have an idea of what could suit you best. Would you go for road bikes, mountain bikes, or hybrid mountain bikes?
The first popular bikes appeared in the 70s. These were what we know as road bikes. Basically, they are characterized by lightweight frames, curved and dropped handlebars, narrow tires, and narrow seats.
It was in Europe where road bikes actually originated. Their narrow seats and dropped handlebars were intended for the rider to be able to pedal more efficiently while his or her back is parallel to the ground. The position may not very comfortable but it's useful for the speed because there is less air resistance. Their narrow tires are also light and produce less rolling friction which lets the rider go further even with less effort. However, they are more prone to flats.
After the road bikes, mountain bikes emerged in the 80 s. Essentially, these bikes had three features: two-inch wide tires, 15 or more gears, and wide and flat handlebars. The wide tires had a lot of cushion against bumps and large knobs for better terrain grab. On the other hand, the multiple gears are consisted of many low gears so climbing up steep hills become possible. Their flat handlebars, often as high as or higher than the saddle, are important for enabling the riders to sit more upright than the usual road bikes. Mountain bikes have certainly improved a lot through the years, but these three components remain quite consistent.
Finally, after the mountain bikes came around, the hybrid mountain bikes. These bikes appeared in the late 80 s. They have combination of both road bikes and the usual mountain bikes features. They have high and flat handlebar, as well as relatively wide saddle (both typical of mountain bikes) to give the cyclists a more comfortable ride. At the same time, they have narrow tires and rims (typical of road bikes) which enable them to roll more easily. Hybrids also have a wide array of gears but they are of higher range compared with the gears of your usual mountain bikes.
If you wish to enjoy both the benefits of owning a road bike and a mountain bike, going for hybrid may be a good idea. Hybrid mountain bikes may not be as sturdy as typical mountain bikes and would not handle rough trails as much as the latter would, but they are a lot faster and a lot more comfortable than any road bikes.
