Your home is a place of zen. It s one of your biggest investments from your hard earned money. Inside that haven is the kitchen, the heart of the home. You chose to reface your kitchen cabinets to give those old cabinets a new look. It s the cheapest way to update your kitchen and refacing kitchen cabinets on your own will save you hundreds of dollars. But what is refacing? Refacing is replacing the doors, drawer fronts and hardware, and covering the sides and framework with stick-on veneer or glued-on plywood. You will get a new look for your cabinets at less than half the cost of having a brand new one Below is a simple guide for refacing kitchen cabinets.
First, look for options on how you want your cabinets to look like. There are numerous companies offering materials for refacing. There are available ready made cabinet doors in the market that fit your taste. Choose whether you want to use self-adhesive covering (SAC) or plywood for your end panels and frames. The plywood pieces you will receive were precut already and are attached on the cabinet box which is the exposed sides. On the other hand, the self-adhesive covering is laminated wood peeled and ironed into the cabinet frame s front side.
Second, make sure to get the measurement of your cabinets precisely for you to be able to order the right materials for your project. Make a drawing of the layout of the cabinet to serve as your guide in putting the measurements of the drawer fronts and cabinet doors. Put the lengths and the widths.
Third, using a screwdriver, remove the cabinet doors, hardware, drawer fronts, and hinges. Using sandpaper and your hands, sand all the surfaces of the cabinet box and end panels. Do not use a power sander because it will make markings. Using a clean cloth, get rid of the dust from the surface and then wash everything with soapy warm water.
Fourth, using glue, make a zigzag pattern at the back side of the panel from top to bottom about an inch from the edge. Smooth firmly all areas - from the center up to the corners. Remove any glue that squirts out and fasten the panels with small finishing nails every 8 inches or in each corner.
Fifth, apply the self-adhesive covering of the front sides of the cabinet boxes. Cut the veneer strips two inches longer and a half inch wider than the stiles and rails that you will be covering with the use of a utility knife. Remove a corner of the self-sticking backing and press it down. Strip off the rest of the backing as you go. Use a wood block to firmly press down to remove the air bubbles.
Sixth, should you want to change the hardware, make sure to bring a sample of the old one where you will buy the replacement to ensure correct measurement. This is the final step. You now attach the door and drawer fronts. You should never put new hinges back into the previous hinge holes that are beneath the new veneer surface because they become loose and may pull off the veneer easily. It is advisable to put the new hinges two inches from the top and bottom of the doors.
Painting your cabinets is optional and would be the last step. Some people prefer to have a brand new look and some a natural wood surface. Once you are done, you may now pat your back and have a good look at your project and think of how you saved a lot of money.
