The Christmas season is a favourite time to take a trip for many people. Here's our favourite merry places to visit across the UK along with some of the treats that festive travellers will love.
York
York is a place that has been remarkable for the magical experience that it can give to tourist during Christmas Hotel Breaks. The cobbled streets around York Minster sparkle with lights which are complemented by spectacular ice sculptures and enjoyable street entertainment.
The festivities start around mid-November with late night shopping at the amazing International Christmas Fayre and St. Nicholas Fayre. You can count on hearing carollers singing Christmas melodies and enjoying the scents of the season like roasted chestnuts and hot chocolate, and of course, meeting with Santa.
Activities include ice skating at the Ice Factor, the Festival of Angels, wonderful pantomimes, amazing music presentations, and ghost tours for the real thrill seekers. Pay a visit at the Treasurer's House to see who is haunting it this Christmas.
Museums like the renowned Yorkshire Museum, York Dungeon and the York Castle Museum are only some of the historical sites that you can find at York. At Christmas time, you can even take a tour of the city on the Yorkboat and cruise.
Edinburgh
Edinburgh is full of sites to see at Christmastime. Sparkling fountains, Edinburgh's Christmas Tree, the eye catching and realistic Nativity Scene, and the "White Christmas" featured at the Edinburgh Sparkles Snow Globe.
Do you want some fun and entertainment? Then you should look forward to puppet shows, dance production and music broadcasts in addition to carol concerts. There are a lot of Christmas presentations, church services, guided trips, art and craft fairs, parades, plus street entertainment along with a ride on Edinburgh Wheel or ice skating in the "Winter Wonderland". The town of Edinburgh is also a great place to stay through Hogmanay with New Year's celebrations like you've never seen before.
Shetland Isles
If you enjoy the outdoors in wintertime, you will love visiting The Shetland Isles around Christmastime where you can watch many sea mammals from the Island beaches. Watching the singing seals, the entertaining otters, the graceful dolphins and majestic orcas is an experience that you won't forget. You might even catch a Shetland pony show.
The Shetland Isles is a perfect place for walking or cycling and taking in the astounding scenery or fishing, playing golf, diving, or kayaking. For the indoor type of activities, there are numerous events like music and culture including historical museums and exhibitions. Around New Years, many people have reported seeing the mysterious Northern Lights from the area.
Keswick
Keswick is a town near the renowned English Lake District, a land of fantastic lakes and graceful mountains. The town's nearby lake, Derwentwater, is thought to be the very lake that where King Arthur acquired Excalibur, his famous sword, from the Lady of the Lake. Another prominent place to visit is the Castlerigg Stone Circle which is believed to have been used for druidic religious purposes over 3000 years ago. On top of these historic places, Keswick also has a Traditional Christmas Fayre along with celebrations and festivities, museums, Theatre by the Lake, and numerous outdoor activities.
London
London is one of the world's great capital cities and a breathtaking place to visit over Christmas with too many events to mention. The entire city sparkles with lights and this year Regent and Oxford street intend to make a collaboration with their switching on events to celebrate the premier of Disney's A Christmas Carol. Throughout the city, there are many Christmas shows including theatre, ballet and pantomimes on top of many Festive Fairs. Why not combine your Christmas Hotel Break with one of many London theatre hotels? Trafalgar Square is a wonderful spot to listen to carollers who sing to raise money for a number of charities. London is the place to be if you are hoping for a non-stop variety of things to do over the Christmas season.
