In 1989, watchmakers PatekPhilippe set out to manufacture a watch which they called Calibre89. They described it as "the most complicated watch in the world." It weighs 1.1 kilogram, has 24 hands and has 1,728 components. These complex watches are often considered as collectibles by watch aficionados.

Wristwatches are most of the time obtained for their pure beauty. They are considered as jewelry or piece of art rather than just simple timepieces. This created a range of markets for watch makers. Some watch makers make inexpensive yet accurate watches while others produce expensive pieces which main purpose is to serve as an adornment.

Watches for men and women are now being incorporated into the world of fashion. Some watches are embellished with precious stones set in equally valuable metals. There is also a market for what is known as a "nerd" watch. Such a watch may be fitted with computers and satellite navigation. Other watches are fitted with GPS.
