Is there anything more relaxing that stepping into the hot water of a spa or hot tub? Pools are nice but they are nowhere near as relaxing. Hot tubs are an answer to modern day tension. So, what happens when something breaks? I'll tell you what happens, cold water! When your tub heater breaks, the water gets cold in a hurry. You see, your hot tub heater is not like a solar pool heater, with almost no moving parts.
There are two things that could be causing your hot tub heater to go on the fritz. The two parts are the heater assembly and or the heater element. If your assembly does not leak and does not have any rust on it, then it's probably okay. At this point you would replace the element and your heater would be fixed.
However, there is a catch. The catch is that the element is inside the assembly. Sometimes it's easier and faster to replace the entire assembly, instead of removing the assembly and then removing the element and then putting a good element back into the assembly, and lastly putting the whole assembly back into the heater. Just replace the assembly with a new one and your are done. Costs more but saves time and hassle.
You will need to determine what assembly to replace yours with. Simply look at the tag on the outside of the old assembly for the voltage and amperage specifications and get a replacement that meets the specifications.
If you decide to replace the element you will first need to remove it from the assembly. Once you do that you then view the element to find the specifications for power etched into the side. You will not find a tag as you did with the assembly. Elements come in coated and uncoated editions. The coated version lasts longer and resists corrosion.
Often times people want to know if they can upgrade their heater to a more powerful one, since the old one is broken anyway. It's reasonable to assume that the timing would be good for such an upgrade. Unfortunately, the answer is "no," you cannot upgrade your heater. The reason is because the tub as a whole was designed around the power specifications of the heater. If you increase or decrease the power of the heater, you throw the design out of balance. This may result in damage to other areas of the tub and or it not functioning as well as it was designed to. If you are unhappy with the power of your heater you are best off getting a new and different tub, one that was designed to deliver more heat.
Depending on how old your hot tub is, it may be a good idea to check out a new one. Every few years the technology improves in ways that save energy and money. Newer tubs also require less maintenance. Solar pool heating has not yet come to hot tubs, but it will soon. Since you are repairing your old tub now, maybe the timing is right to spend a few minutes on Google to see what's new.
