Compared to fish-only tanks and FOWLR tanks, building and caring for reef tanks is generally tougher . To differentiate, a fish only tank uses mechanical and chemical means of filtration. FOWLR tanks or "fish only with live rock" as the name suggest, do have live rocks without live corals and other invertebrates on it. Reef tanks, on the other hand, contain not only the fish and the live rocks but also live corals, some sea plants and algae and other aquatic invertebrates. Turning a "fish only" tank into a reef tanks does not only involve putting in all those missing components. In order to promote survival other components such as lighting, water movement and water chemistry needs to be considered. So before you start building you own ref aquarium, here are some of the challenges that you may encounter.
Cost
Not surprisingly, reef aquariums would cost more than the other aquarium types. Some hobbyists would place the cost to at least $3000 for the complete basic tools and equipments for a single aquarium. These basic equipment would include the tank, filter, CO2 regulator, calcium reactor etc. you would also need to buy live rocks and corals if you don't have them yet. Aside from the tools and gadgets, periodic costs would also include water change, fish feeds and electricity for the equipments. However, these costs could be lessened if you already have some of the equipment or you can even buy second hand tools.
Time
A reef aquarium is not built on a day. Not even in weeks, according to most aquarists. Because reef aquarium is already considered as a miniature of a biodiversity, time is necessary to allow living things to adapt to this kind of environment. In fact, introduction of new species into the reef can not be done all the same time. Allowing each creature to assimilate well into this diverse community would help keep the ecological balance.
Safety
Because reef aquarium uses more electrical tools like the lightings and the heater, safety is also an issue that needs to be addressed. To ensure safety, it is better to buy tools that are more durable than inexpensive ones which needs more frequent maintenance. Moreover, salt water is deemed highly conductive to electricity, so it is best to plug your equipments to a GFCI circuitry
Admittedly , a lot of things are required from a person to keep a reef aquarium. One might even wonder if the cost and the time it takes to maintain a reef aquarium is equal to the reward the actual result. However, aquarists and hobbyist alike will attest to the fact that despite its demand and degree of difficult for a simply hobby, seeing first hand the successful interaction amongst diverse aquatic life right at the center of your own living room is enough compensation for each hours spent in maintaining a reef tanks. Being greeted by a variety of colorful sea creatures all distinctly unique and fascinating, after a day's work is just one of the few reasons why it is worth it.
