My wife and I decided to visit some friends who had just completed a kitchen remodel. Our aim was to see what they had done and perhaps get some ideas for our own upcoming project. We were planning on refacing the cabinets and perhaps adding a custom island.
We expected to see that our friends had nice new appliances like a Viking range and an GE refrigerator. We also expected to see fresh paint and perhaps new ceiling lights. When we got there we were really impressed by what we saw. The place was gorgeous.
After we took it all in for a minute, we zeroed in on a beautiful tile area. This area was near the sink and abutted the counter. What we saw were beautiful aqua blue and green shiny tiles that seemed like a piece of art that you might find at a gallery. The design and craftsmanship were first-rate. We came to learn that this tile was called a backsplash and that the purpose was to make it easier to clean grease and grime.
While I was happy that the backslash had a practical purpose, I was really impressed by how nice it looked. It was like the center piece at an exhibit and the rest of the kitchen was backdrop. As I thought about it, it began to make more sense. Over the years I've seen superb tile work in bathrooms and on patios. It just never occurred to me that the same could be done in the kitchen also.
The trick to making this work is to pick tiles and colors that match the décor of the kitchen. In addition to color tiles you can use pattern tiles. Pattern tiles have patterns on them, as you might have figured out. Tiles come on 12 x 12 sheets. You take these sheets and affix them to the part of the kitchen where you want the backsplash. You might have to cut the sheets to get them to fit nicely around the contours of counters and or cabinets. Making these cuts is not too difficult with the right tools and will be well worth it as a fitted look is much more professional.
Most people who have installed backsplashes DIY (do it yourself) will tell you that the cost per foot is about $20. If you go with really high end tile you may be a bit over that amount. If you have the tile installed by a professional the the cost will be more.
Regardless of if you choose DIY or contractor putting in a tile backsplash is very worthwhile. They are very nice looking and they make kitchen clean up much easier. What's not to like?
A word of caution though. Installation is very important. If the installation is not done well, the tile sheets and the tiles will start to come loose over time. They will start to sag and hang. It's not a pretty site. The benefit of going contractor, assuming you can find a good one, is that you won't have to do the job over in six months.
