In the old days you used to walk into the kitchen and flip on a single light switch. At that point the room would light up and you were finished. With newer and or remodeled kitchens that's no longer the case. Now when you go into the kitchen you will often see as many as three or four light switch boxes side by side on the wall.
Furthermore, each of these boxes may have three or four switches. Some of the pricier ones even come with more switches for dimmers. When faced with such a battery of switches it's difficult to tell if you walked into the kitchen or into the cockpit of a 747. Well, not really, but you get the picture. Lots of switches.
So, why are there so many light switches in the modern kitchen? It may at first seem like vanity in that some people just want the biggest and best of everything. There is perhaps some of that. However, there is also a practical reason. The reason is because kitchen lighting is comprised of not one but three unique kinds of lights, each with its own job.
The three types of lights are first, ceiling lights. These lights are often sunk into the ceiling and are referred to as recessed lighting. These lights supply the majority of the light volume in a kitchen. They are often general purpose in that they are not solely for ambience and not just task lighting.
Next are the lights that go under the wall units. These lights are often task lights that shine brightly on surfaces that people could be working on. These lights are often small, recessed and on tracks. As an example you might find them below a cabinet shining down on a counter.
Last but not least are the lights that hang from the ceiling. These lights are often a mix of ambience and task, depending on their design purpose. A unique point about these lights is that they often play a role in the overall design or architecture of the kitchen. They not only provide light, they also help style the room also.
Three different kinds of lights doing up to six total jobs. When seen in this context is makes sense that the old time single switch on the wall would no longer work out. The great thing about all the switches is that they let you in essence "tune" the lighting to your exact specifications. If you are alone in the kitchen cooking, no problem set the lighting for the job. If your children come home and sit at the island for a snack and some homework, no problem, add in some task lighting. If the family is sitting down to a nice breakfast meal at the kitchen table, again not to worry, just dial in some ambient lighting.
Now you have a basic overview of the way kitchen lighting works these days. It makes sense and I'm happy about it because the kitchen is a very important place where a lot goes on.
