When it comes to kitchen remodeling often times married couples have differing opinions as to what they would like in a new kitchen. My better half and I could not agree on any of it. We could not agree on what color to paint the ceilings, what the kitchen island should look like or what kind of refrigerator to get.
As a result, we decided to try and find a way to resolve our differences so that we could move forward and get the kitchen remodeling project done. We decided to try going to stores like Home Depot or Lowes to see at all of the different options on everything. We began taking notes and eliminating options as soon as possible.
This allowed us to narrow down the range of options. Once we had our short list it was way easier to negotiate and come to a compromise about what we wanted. Often times one of us would just give in because we really did not care that much about whatever it was. For example, I do not care what color the kitchen backsplash was to be, so I completely left it to my wife. She did not care so much about the kitchen ceiling lights, so I got to pick those.
We repeated this activity for several weeks as we went through the project. Another thing we did that really helped was talked to our neighbors' about how they have completed home improvement projects over the years. The best tip we got was to do a little bit every year. To not do big projects or big chunks, instead just do a little bit every year. This idea has lots of benefits, for example it makes it easier to deal with financially. It also makes negotiation with your better half less often necessary. It also keeps your house from being torn up for long periods of time.
No one likes a messy house; in fact that was the hardest part of our last project. If you have kids, doing a little bit every year makes it easier for them also because their routine is also not as disrupted. The same goes for your pets; they don't like it when you change things so the less you can make those changes, the better for them. The key is small chunks, small projects every year.
On our first project we did not know about the advice to only do small projects so we went with a big one. Our goal was to get the kitchen remodel finished by the end of summer. We actually got it finished in October. Overall it came out fine, we are happy with it. But, next time, we will listen to our smart neighbor's advice.
