If you have experienced a taste of what's it like to paddle out in the calm water while you were vacationing at some exclusive beach resort in Asia or the Maldives, you must know how soothing it is to the nerves. There is, however, another dose of kayaking experience that few dare to venture into because of sheer fear.
This is called whitewater kayaking. Comparing it to recreational kayaking would be like comparing a zephyr to a tornado. Different from recreational kayaking where you paddle out into a calm body of water and enjoy a serene and tranquil environment, whitewater kayaking is the complete opposite. Kayakers launch their boat onto a moving body of water that has varying degrees of difficulty. These are called whitewater grades with 1 being the easiest and 6 as the most dangerous. There are also different kinds of whitewater kayaking: river running, creeking, slalom, playboating, and squirt boating.
To put it briefly, river running is similar to a river tour while having the right mix of excitement as the kayak passes through both easy and difficult sections of the river. This is also where wildwater racing comes in where kayaks literally race down the river. If you're looking for a really changing kayaking adventure, creeking may be the best bet. On the sport's difficulty scale of 1 to 6, creeking falls between 4 to 6, a real nerve-wracking test for the daredevils. Slalom, on the other hand, leans on the more technical side of this sport as this is the only whitewater activity to be included in the Olympic Games. For lesiure seekers, slalom may not be the kind of thrill you're looking for. Then there is playboating, which is an exciting event to watch because kayakers do a lot of tricks to work against the flow of the river. Here, you'll get to see the sheer strength and artistry of the kayakers as they fly in the air, spin the boat, perform cartwheels, and other gymanstic maneuvers. For the more experienced kayakers, this is one area that should be truly an adventure. Lastly, squirt boating is a kayaking event where the boat is designed use both currents of the water surface and underwater to move around the water, though not as popular as the others.
These are awesome events to try out when you've had a few years of experienced tucked under your belt. While these are not really advisable for beginners, it wouldn't hurt to learn a thing or two about these as long as you're with an experienced kayaker friend or have signed up for kayaking lessons. Before you set out on another water adventure with your kayak, do look up for kayaking reviews so you'd know which event works for you, where to go for these activities, and what you should do to ensure your safety.
