What are those weird three letters at the end of each media file, as in .mp3 in song.mp3? Well, they are what tech geeks call media format. Computers and media devices nowadays are of course digital; and therefore to be able to view photos and play songs and movies, these media should be first properly digitized and encoded. It's like converting a cassette tape to bits and bytes. Media formats then are the outputs of the digitization and encoding processes, and there are many of them. They are curtly named as MP3, MP4, M4A, WAV, APE, AC3, OGG, etc. And obviously, they are more of an inconvenience to all the music lovers and audiophiles because there is no universal format for all softwares, media players and audio systems. But that is no problemo, there are a lot of converters, a FLAC to AAC converter for example, available and downloadable from the Internet. This solves the hassle of a lack of universal format.
What are these two examples of media format, FLAC and AAC, exactly? First, FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. Primarily developed by Josh Coalson and Ed Whitney, it is an audio compression codec and which uses a 'lossless data compression algorithm'. Audio files are decompressed into 50%-60% size without losing the data, thereby creating an exactly identical file. But as unlike the more popular formats such as MP3, FLAC only has limited playback support for most softwares and media devices. Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), on the other hand, uses 'lossy compression' and has better sound quality than the MP3 format. Because it is designed to the successor of MP3, AAC is now being used as standard format for most wireless devices, portable media players and gaming platforms. In short, of all file extensions MP3/AAC is most commonly used. Audios aren't always in an excellent format, and thereby one needs a FLAC to AAC converter.
Most converters can support multiply format, and there are no specific "X format to X format-only" programs. Like the Switch Plus Audio Converter for example. It can convert any audio file of any size to MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, AC3, APE, M4A, FLAC, OGG or many other format; and it does its job well and simple. Switch's simplicity and ease of use is a winner. A user can also do other encoding options, such as increasing/decreasing the bitrate, changing the sound quality and/or reducing the file size. Overall, Switch is a good FLAC to AAC converter, among other things.
Another fairly good converters are the Koyote Soft's Free MP3 to WMA Converter and BonkEnc's Free Audio Converter. Despite its name, the former can also handle multiple formats but not as extensive as Switch; while conveniently the latter has a built-in CD ripper. BonkEnc's good point is that it can convert audio files by groups, but both these FLAC to AAC converters do their jobs well. But the best thing of all is they are available at no cost.
