You've had the Big Idea. Instead of commuting into work, you're going to work from home. And even better, you are going to run your own business from home. So you start getting stuck in, and before too long you are glued to your computer, furiously making notes and diagrams on pieces of paper, then shuffling those bits of paper around. You tell yourself things like "All entrepreneurs have to work harder and make more sacrifices to succeed, especially in the beginning. Just a little bit longer and I'll be ready." Of course, that day never comes. You're a slave to a theory. And the theory is wrong.
TIP #1: Schedule breaks. Know in advance when you are going to stop. When that time comes around, stop. Go away and recharge your batteries. Relax in the knowledge that you haven't finished, that there will always be more jobs to do. Go enjoy yourself and they'll still be here waiting for you tomorrow.
Your spouse starts to protest that they are not seeing as much of you these days. So you bring some piles of paperwork with you to the kitchen table. They ask you when you will be moving those piles so that you can all sit down and eat together as a family. They remind you that yes, you do have children. You can't get any work done at the kitchen table because everyone talks to you and tries to peer over your shoulder at what you are doing. Shifting to the sofa does not make the problem go away. You go back to your home office, but no sooner have you sat down than they are talking to you again, thinking that you are not working.
TIP #2: Separate your roles. You need a space in your home that is only used for work. Set up your workspace so that whenever you sit in that chair you're at work. Whenever you are out of that chair you're on your own personal time. Tell your family that when you are in your work chair, you are only to be disturbed if there is a real emergency.
You take phone calls while you are trying to finish writing a promotional piece. You interrupt yourself every few minutes to check your email Inbox. You start several tasks, and hours later you haven't finished any of them. You fire up your web browser to research something, and hours later you realise that you've been surfing from site to site and you haven't achieved anything. Welcome to the home based business trap.
TIP #3: Only do one thing at a time. Multitasking wastes time, single-minded focus is what gets things done. If you must make lists, list four or five small bite-sized tasks and just go ahead and do them, get them done, tick them off your list.
If you can master these basic but important tips and strategies, you will greatly improve your chances of enjoying running your own business from home, for many years to come.
