A web hosting control panel is an online application which is offered by many different internet hosting companies to cater to website management, database supervision, and email configuration needs, among others, of their subscribers and clients. CPanel is one of the many control panels in the market today and it is a very versatile and reliable one as well. In this article, the history of CPanel will be discussed.
The CPanel web hosting control panel was first made available to the demands of the public in the 27th of March in the year 1996. Initially, its author, J. Nick Koston, conceived and developed the product as the control panel for Speed Hosting, where he was a stock holder. Web King, another internet hosting server, had a merger with Speed Hosting which thus prompted them to utilize CPanel as well. However, when the two companies joined forces, they decided to transfer all their servers to VDI, or Virtual Development Inc. Due to this and an agreement between the CPanel author, J. Nick Koston, and VDI, the use of CPanel was only offered to the subscribers of the previously mentioned company.
There was a slight rivalry between VDI and Alabanza during this period because theirs were the only control panels of choice then. Three years later, the third version of CPanel was released, with the key elements of having a Web Host Manager and an automatic upgrader which the older varieties of CPanel did not have. However, the 1999 release of CPanel lacked efficiency in its themes and was quite buggy. Thus, Carlos Rego of WizardsHosting decided to refurbish the software and his work is now its preset user interface.
When all was said and done, because of J. Nick Koston's disputes with VDI, CPanel was turned into two different platforms. Koston, of course, kept the original name CPanel, while VDI called their version as WebPanel. However, with no developer to maintain and improve the said control panel, VDI discontinued their support for the program entirely. J. Nick Koston moved on to work for BurstNET while still continuously working on the CPanel web hosting control panel. Yet in the end, his final resolve was to pursue enhancing his control panel, thus causing him to say good bye to BurstNET.
Over the years, J. Nick Koston persisted in improving the CPanel and now it is known as one of the most dependable as well as being one of the most secure web hosting control panel in the market. The latest stable release is version 11.25.0-46156, which came out in June 1 of the year 2010. The most up to date preview release, on the other hand, is version 11.27-48365 which came out on the 2nd of September, year 2010, just three months after the former. CPanel is a multilingual control panel that runs on Linux, BSD and Windows Operating Systems. Its license is proprietary and more information about it can be found at its website, http://www.cpanel.net.
