In the world of motor sports, formula is a jargon used to describe a single-seat racing car with open wheels-something that you don't usually see hitting the roads. If you say formula 1 race, therefore, it only means that it is the premier event in the realm of the formulas.
Calling race cars as formulas has a long , interesting history itself. But to make the story short, the term was rooted from the very spirit of competition. In the early decades of automobile racing, participants were not required to submit to any regulations regarding the specifications of their cars. These subsequently resulted to motor racers packing their vehicles with crazy mechanisms to enhance power and speed. Since there were no limitations, sometimes the racers would employ dangerous if not lethal mechanical strategies just to win.
To put all racing contestants in the level playing field therefore, the governing bodies of automobile sport events started imposing rules regarding the specifications of the cars. These specifications, called formula, serve as an equalizer in terms of vehicle power, weight, size, engine, and so on. Only those participants with cars submitting to the formula were allowed to compete.
And there it went. In the late 1940s, after the Second World War, formula one was born. After this formula two was immediately coined to refer to the junior category of races where engines and specifications were smaller or less demanding. After this came an even minor version, formula three.
Formula 1 race, it has been said countless times, is the technological and mechanical pinnacle of motor sports. It is the wealthiest since it gathers all major car manufacturers in the world. It is the most competitive in as much as it presents the most highly-skilled drivers the world can ever produce. It is the most difficult since racing tracks are set in a highly challenging driving environment. It is also the most political in as much as it often creates verbal wars between drivers, car engineers, brand executives, and even public officials. Formula 1 is the kind of sport that glorifies you excessively when you win but make you feel like crap when you fail.
Unlike other major racing events, Formula 1 does not solely focus on the search for the fastest drivers. It is also a competition between car makers and of their country of origin. The development of cars to be used in the future races is always being watched out as this predicts the future technologies that will later surface in the machines of mass-produced road cars.
If you're going to compare the Formula 1 race to other kinds of major racing events, you'll notice how F1 is in the top of the game. CART and IRL racing, for instance, involve heavier and less powerful cars, not mentioning that these races do not have teams that produce, engineer, and design the cars themselves. NASCAR racing focuses usually on American cars, while Touring Car racing is heavily participated by European cars-which means that both lack the global scope of competition that Formula 1 has.
