The lifestyle of the modern man has brought along some health disorders including the common agonizing back pain. Strenuous exercises or work, poor hygiene and inadequate health maintenance are some of the underlying causes of lower back pain for many people today. Though back pain is not usually life threatening, it sometimes presents an extremely painful ache which may spread to the legs and can be very unbearable.
Nevertheless, most back pains do not last for too long and are thus referred to as 'acute' by medical personnel. In this case, they would not last more than a few days or weeks and are usually due stress on the muscles of the back. This can cause serious aches or pain on the back. Also, movement of the back can be restricted and one may be unable to stand up straight.
Generally, the causes of lower back pain are usually related to the bones, muscles or spine. They may include:
• Fractures: These include compression and vertebral fractures. Compression fractures can occur in men or women who have been using corticosteroids for a long time. Vertebral fractures however may occur due to sudden heavy pressure on the spine during work or motor accident.
• Inflammation: Inflammation of the joint called osteoarthritis usually causes back pain. Most of the time, osteoarthritis comes naturally with old age. Also, severe inflammation of the joints in the spinal cord called Ankylosing spondylitis may cause back pain and stiffness.
• Injury: Direct injury to the body tissues around the lower back can cause severe pain. Similarly, overuse of the muscle, joint or ligament of the back can also cause severe lower back pain.
• Infection: Bacterial infection of the spine can also result in back pain. This happens when bacteria gets to the spine through the blood, perhaps by spreading from a particular infection or through an intravenous injection.
• Diseases: Some diseases which affect the bone have been identified as causes of back pain though not very commonly. For example, Paget's disease causes abnormal growth of the bones of the hip, back, head, chest and legs, thus cause back pain while Scheuermann's disease causes abnormal shape or deformity of some of the vertebrae which make up the spine, especially around the chest resulting in curved or rounded back.
• Aggravated activities: A sudden increase in normal activities can cause back pain called Spondylolysis whereby one or more vertebrae slide away from their position. Also, sudden or continuous heavy pressure on or vibration of a joint can cause herniation of the vertebral disc resulting in serious back pain.
• Spinal stenosis: Naturally, the spine constricts towards old age. This reduction in size can cause lower back pain for older people.
Conclusion
Finally, it is important to note that back pain can also be caused by very critical conditions arising from other parts of the body. So, when you have back pain, followed by fever, painful cough, loss of control of some organs or increase pain in other parts of the body, you need an urgent medical attention.
