Over the years, there has been a significant increase in the number of home owners that have had adjustments done to their home, both for aesthetic and durability purposes. Most extension jobs have to do with building a deck to expand the area of the home. However, with such projects comes the need to find a material that can withstand the various natural elements.
Wood has always been the primary choice for such building jobs, but it tends to be a little too expensive to maintain. While it may lend the area a homey feel, it can be somewhat difficult to maintain and making sure that it is free from molds and mildews can be quite a hassle. In addition to this, wood is very much prone to splitting, discoloration, and splintering.
Fortunately, hardware manufacturers have found a way to address this concern. By mixing wood and plastic fibers, they now produce an alternative building material that may be used in much the same way as wood. This material is called wood composite decking and it is taking the outdoor building industry by storm for all the good reasons.
In addition to performing the functions of natural wood up to par, wood composite decking also possesses a number of other advantages. First off, it is environmentally-friendly. Believe it or not, making wood composite minimizes the need to cut down trees for building materials. This is due to the fact that wood composite is made from recycled materials. No wood preservatives are used to produce this building material as well.
Wood composite decking is also very easy to install. All you have to do is to install it in an area where there is good airflow. You are also advised to keep a gap in between two planks of the composite to let air pass in between them.
Another advantage is the fact that wood composite decking does not react to heat as wood does. Unlike natural wood, wood composite does not expand or contract with every change of temperature. This is an important feature especially if you live in a place that experiences sudden weather changes. Some brands are also treated with UV stabilizers that help them resist the bad effects of sunlight. Because of this, the composite will experience minimal or no fading at all, even if you place it in an area that often receives direct sunlight.
Because there is little to no chance that wood composite will split or splinter, very minimal maintenance is required. Because of its outer covering, cleaning stains off is as easy as taking a hose and washing the area. More serious stains would require the use of cleaners but, compared to cleaning natural wood, the process will still be much easier.
Finally, and most importantly, wood composite is very durable. While the initial cost of buying and installing it may be somewhat costly, you will definitely be able to save money in the long run. Because it is very low maintenance, you would not have to spend hundreds of dollars on yearly painting and staining jobs. You no longer have to worry about shelling out more cash for up-keep once you have it installed.
