While wood may seem to be the most logical material to use for outdoor building, it will never be completely maintenance-free. Even the most durable kind of wood will require to be painted and resealed twice or thrice every year to ensure that it stays protected from natural elements. Forget about these maintenance tasks and you will face the risk of needing to have the material replaced completely.
Because of this, more and more people are starting to turn to an alternative building material: wood composite decking. It is usually made from a mix of wood fibers and plastic fibers, formed into sheets. Because of this, it reacts to natural elements differently from how natural wood does. With this material, you can expect minimal graying, staining, splitting, and splintering.
Furthermore, maintaining it and keeping it up to shape requires very little from the homeowner. While keeping it clean is the best way to make it last longer, you would not have to do it as often as with natural wood. There are various brands of cleaners that are designed specifically to clean this type of material, but if you cannot find it, you may use regular cleaning agents as well. Simply choose the one which has the mildest formula to avoid damaging the plastic element in it.
In cleaning your wood composite deck, you would have to start with clearing and sweeping the area. Completely do away with deposits and build-ups like dried up dirt and mud to keep it from spreading once the cleaning agent is applied. For best results, choose to do this task when the temperature is not too humid. It is important to keep the surface of your decking cool to avoid any damage once you apply the cleaner.
After this, you may now start spraying your wood composite decking with your cleaner. You might want to do this one small area at a time to ensure that you do everything correctly. Apply a thin layer of your cleaning agent to the surface of the decking through a sprayer and use a foam mop to apply it evenly. Read the instructions on the bottle of the cleaner to find out how long you have to let the cleaner sit before washing it off.
After leaving it on for a while, use a hose to remove the cleaner from the decking. Try not to keep the nozzle focused on a certain spot for too long to avoid doing any damage to your deck. Make sure that you rinse of the cleaner using smooth, flowing motions to avoid leaving any marks on it. After you finish cleaning one area, move on to the next.
Use a brass wire brush to repair any scratch or nicks on the surface of your wood composite decking. Regularly brush the surface until it evens out. Remember not to brush too hard to avoid damaging your deck.
You should also refrain from using high-powered hoses in rinsing off the cleaner. Stick to the low or the moderate setting and remember to keep the nozzle at least eight inches away from the surface of your wood composite decking.
