Knives have been with us for thousands of years and have been a very useful tool in allowing mankind to develop from his humble historic beginning to his modern day version of a knife-toting Rambo. Knives are man's first hand-held tool and were used for a lot of things. Today, most manufacturers of knives use modern technology to make knives which are resistant to corrosion and are stronger, lighter than their older versions. These new knives for sale are easily identifiable by the type of metal used as blades or by their handles which are often made of rubber.
Old knives were usually made of rock, flint, or obsidian but as new technology for metallurgy was discovered, new metals were used as blades for knives. Today, new knives for sale often have blades made of stainless steel, carbon alloy, or titanium. There are also laminated blades which combines different metals to get the best properties of each metal. Carbon as a blade can be very sharp and is easy to sharpen but is prone to rust. Stainless steel on the other hand is not as sharp as carbon but is very resistant to rust and corrosion. To combine both the sharpness of carbon and the apparent resistance to corrosion of stainless steel, high carbon stainless steel was made. This is a type of stainless steel mixed with a high amount of carbon. High carbon stainless steel knives maintains its edge very well and do not rust easily. The most modern metal used in knives though is titanium. Titanium is lighter, stronger, yet corrosion-resistant.
Designs of modern knives also vary markedly from old knives. For example, old Swiss knives often have nail nicks on their blades in order for the knife to be unfolded while newer Swiss knives have a stud, a hole, or a flipper located on the blade. Handles are also usually made of rubber but can occasionally still be made of wood. However, most modern knives will have laminated woods as handles to avoid it from being ruined due to prolonged exposure to humidity or being plunged into water. Other modern handles include handles made of plastic, stainless steel, leather, and fiberglass.
Aside from the basic knife design being changed, some modern knives have completely changed from its original design and have incorporated modern ideas. In fact, it is common to see knives which don't look like knives at all. Examples of these are pen knives, scissor knives, lipstick knives, key-shaped pocket knives, and belt knives.
If you are searching for new knives for sale, you can always find one at your local knife store or hardware and supply store. Many modern knives are also sold online, in eBay and in auction shops. There are many knife dealers and manufacturers which sell directly to clients. The wide availability of modern knives ensures you will always have a wide selection of knives to choose from. Whatever use you have planned for the knife you are buying, whether you are using it for camping, cooking, or for utilitarian purposes, you can always be sure you'll find what you need easily.
