If you are a knife collector, you are probably one of the few who often visit antique shops, flea markets, and junk yard sales in the hopes of finding antique knives for sale. Antique knives are quite difficult to find so it is understandable how some collectors are willing to pay any price just to have them. However, as with most antiques, there are genuine pieces, and there are counterfeit pieces. Knowing how to tell the difference between the two can save you from making a costly mistake, not to mention the anguish later on when you discover that what you bought was a fake.
Here are some things you can do to ensure you are buying genuine antique knives for sale
1. Buy a guide explaining how old knife manufacturers use numbering systems to identify their knives. It should also contain information on old knife patterns vs. knife patterns which were only developed in recent years. If you see some inconsistencies with the knife being sold and the information you are told, then be suspicious for the knife may very well be counterfeit.
2. Inspect the knives closely. If you use a magnifying glass to inspect the knives, you may see alterations to the knives which can't be seen by the naked eye. Look for signs of uneven wear, mismatched blades, and glues in place of pins. Remember that glue is a modern invention. Old knives used pins to keep it together, not glue. Always inspect the knives using a strong light. Some alterations can be done so cleanly even experts may be fooled. Using a strong light removes any shadow that may be hiding some of these alterations.
3. Look for alterations counterfeiters commonly make such as putting new blades in old handles (or vice versa), wrong patterns in handles, and very light tang stamping with no wear to the blade. Also check for different knives being sold that look exactly the same but with different company names on their blades. Most likely, most of these knives are fake.
5. Conduct extensive research on a supposed knife's history before believing any tales about it. Study knife styles of different eras. If someone is selling you an antique knife supposedly from a certain era, you can immediately know if it is a fake or a genuine just by checking its style. If the style doesn't jibe with the era the seller claims, the knife is fake.
6. Ask the seller if the knife has been altered, restored, cleaned, or repaired. In most cases restoration or cleaning reduces the value of antique knives since some collectors wouldn't know how the knives looked like in its original condition. But that doesn't mean all antique knives should look rusty, and in bad condition. There are some antique knives that are in mint condition, allowing them to be routinely cleaned and oiled.
Finally, always remember this piece of advice from expert collectors: buy the knife, not the story. If you encounter a seller telling such a fantastic tale about the knife, chances are, he's just selling you a story and have no genuine antique knives for sale.
