Whether you're an archeologist, a hobbyist, or just a beginner, you'll find some of these metal detector tips useful in your search for coins, precious metals, and lost treasure.
1. Beginning - if you're just beginning the hobby, you'll find that searching for coins or precious metals takes time, patience, and a lot of experience. When you're just learning, you need to take the time to dig everytime your metal detector signals you there's metal underneath the ground. By doing this, you get to learn the different types of metals associated to the different signals detectors give out. As time passes, you become accustomed to these signals and will not have to dig everytime, knowing by experience what type of metal is underneath that is giving out the signal you are receiving from your detector.
2. Proper swinging - there's a proper way to hold and swing your metal detector. Swinging it quickly and in a haphazard manner is sure to net you no results. Likewise, holding it too far above ground means you're losing a few inches of depth which could result in you missing a find. You'll want the detector to be as close to the ground as possible. Swing it in a wide, 180 degree angle, in a slow, deliberate manner. Walk slowly and make sure you are not missing any spot on the ground.
3. Researching good grounds - it is wise to study a place first before going out there and conducting a search. By studying up on the history of your planned search grounds, you give yourself more chances of finding out where to start your search for a more successful venture.
4. Choosing the right equipment - as far as tools are concerned; you need to choose your metal detectors wisely. Using a detector not suited for the type of terrain you are combing, or using one with not enough depth could waste not only your time but valuable resources. Ask the store owners the type of terrain each metal detector you're looking at is good for. Then ask yourself what kind of searching you'll be doing and where you'll be doing it before buying one. Remember that different metals will require different detectors for best results.
5. Avoiding legal trouble - always ask permission from land owners whenever you're conducting a search on private grounds. If you're not sure if the land you're combing is private property, go to the library or research on the web to find out. If you have the time, go ask the land property office in your area to be doubly sure about the land's status. Remember, if you're not sure the land is public property, it's probably private.
6. Always be respectful of other people in the area - if you're searching in a place that is unusually crowded, try starting your search on the far end of the area, where there are less people. If other people go up to chat, be friendly and chat with them. If there are people who are staying on a place you want to search, wait for them to move out before combing searching that area.
These are just some metal detector tips a beginner should follow on their detecting trips. As you gain more experience, you'll form some of your own rules which work for you.
