The use of metal detectors to look for valuable coins and metals dates back to the days when metal detector had just been invented. The need to develop a device to help in searching for precious metals in mining prompted the invention of machines which made use of an induction balance system to indicate the presence of metals. While the earlier machines were bulky, required large amounts of battery power, and were often inaccurate; advances in coil designs, general circuitry, and batteries allowed the manufacture of portable metal detectors that consumed less power and were ten times more accurate than the old models. This development gave rise to the use of metal detectors in search of valuable objects both as a hobby and as a profession. Today, metal detector hobby interests a sizable number of people, with many often starting out as total beginners and learning the trade on the fly.
Most hobbyists get into metal detecting thru a friend or a family member who often tells stories of hitting pay dirt in one of their searches. Often, these stories provide enough motivation to the listener for them to purchase their own metal detectors and try out relic hunting. Most beginners start in their own backyard, and if the enterprise yields one or two interesting finds, the prospective hunter goes on to other areas in the hopes of finding more. This is often the method by which most relic hunters get hooked on treasure or relic hunting. While prospecting do provide the possibility of striking it rich quick, many hunters realize that often, profit comes in small, successive finds, that generate enough to cover the cost of the search and a little extra. Most of these hobbyists accept the fact that treasure hunting can never really be relied upon to be the major source of one's income, and should only be enjoyed as a pastime.
There are however hobbyists who expend serious time and effort into this endeavor, believing that with enough time, patience, and skill, one can someday hit the motherlode of all treasures and retire in a grand fashion. No one knows for sure if this does prove to work in the long run, however, large fortunes made from treasure hunting have also been recorded, so it certainly isn't farfetched to think that treasure hunting can lead to a vast fortune someday.
Of the metal detector hobby one can get involved in, beach combing and coin shooting are two of the most popular types of metal detecting done by hobbyists. In coin shooting, hunters look for valuable and historical coins; in beach combing, hunters look for coins, jewelries and other valuables on the beach. 80% of what hunters find is generally trash, but they do find valuables at one time or another. Most of these finds are then sold to collectors and museums or auctioned off in auction houses. In some cases, countries would lay claim to a historical find, and pay the hunter a finder's fee - in other cases, it is illegal to claim for oneself any artifact found in a certain country.
