Metal detectors have long been used in mining and in wars to detect precious metals, dangerous weapons, and explosives. While metal detectors continue to be used in this way, modern technological advances in coil designs, electronics, and circuitry has allowed making inexpensive lighter, smaller metal detectors which has allowed metal detectors to be used for recreational purposes.
As a hobby
There are four major types of hobbies involving the use of metal detectors, all of them generally fall on one interest - treasure hunting, with just the method of searching and the type of treasure being searcheddiffering from each other. Below are the four major types of metal detector hobby.
1. Coin shooting - coin shooting is the hobby of looking for lost coins that may prove to have historical and collectible value. Many serious coin shooters spend hours, days, and months on research and actual searching just to look for these coins.
2. Beach combing - beach combing is searching the beach for valuables such as coins and jewelry. Many dedicated beach combers study tide movements and erosion to help them in their search for valuables. There are two main methods used in beach combing. One is call gridding - searching in a set pattern in order to cover the whole area of the beach, while the other just involves searching randomly around the beach. While random searching does not allow for a more thorough search of the beach, it does provide the benefit of being able to search quickly and with much less effort - with success depending more on luck than on method.
3. Prospecting - prospecting is the search for precious metals on a much smaller scale than mineral exploration done by commercial mining operators. Prospecting involves physical labor such as panning and sifting. Prospectors are also required to make a claim before they can begin to take samples. Prospecting became famous during the early years of the gold rush, when people were lured into the Wild West hoping to find gold, silver, and other precious metals. Nowadays, modern prospectors rely on training, technology, and the study of geology in order to make a find. Scientific areas which modern prospectors need to specialize in include geological mapping, rock and soil analysis, and land historical research.
4. Relic hunting - relic hunting is similar to beach combing and coin shooting, differing only on the type of valuables being concentrated on. While coin shooting focuses on finding coins, and beach combing only on coins and jewelries, relic hunting focuses on finding any object of value, which include among other things bullets, buckles, buttons, axe heads, cups, and other small items possessing historical or collectible value. Relic hunting yields more in Europe and Asia than anywhere else in the world due probably to the fact that more items have been buried or lost in these areas due to wars and other conflicts than anywhere else.
Depending on a person's skills and interests, each type of metal detector hobby may prove to be profitable or just remain simply as a pastime.
