It may not seem like it, but hiking is serious business and many enthusiasts of this activity can attest to that fact. Aside from knowing beforehand what route is safest to take, there is also the issue of knowing what to pack and what to do while you are on the trail. Contingency measures should also be created especially if you are taking the less traveled paths or when kids younger than 18 are with you.
Naturally enough, many people still have very idealistic views of hiking in general. A lot of people still see this as a way to get down with nature, with moments like sitting down at the side of the path, looking up unto a canopy of foliage while toasting some tidbits of food on a spit, while someone else is taking snapshot of postcard-like views. However, when mosquitoes start biting, and corns or sores start developing on your feet, not to mention walking in circles for hours and hours on end, then you know that the reality of walking trails may be a heck lot different from all the idealistic notions anyone might be harboring.
To make things a lot easier on yourself, here are a few packing essentials that you should never go without while on a hike.
1. Map. This would be great if you are not yet versed with the trails you want to take. However, even if you know the trail like the back of your hand, carrying a map is still a good way to keep safe. Some people opt for GPS systems which is also a great device to use. Just make sure that you actually know how to use the device before setting out. Other devices that would help pinpoint or advertise your location (in case you get lost) are: compasses, matches, candles, flashlights and small flares.
2. Water. Having your own supply of water is essential. You cannot really expect to have a steady supply of clean drinking water while on the trail. If you plan on trekking for long distances, make sure that your route takes you to safe stopovers (preferably those that sell or supply food and water) or within the vicinity of fresh, running water. Water purification pills are only advisable if you are planning on trekking for days.
3. Food and something extra on the side. You do not need to take a lot of food while on the hiking trail, but conveniently packed snacks would help take the edge off especially if you have been walking for several hours. In order to ascertain exactly how much food you ought to be toting around, try to figure out your longest possible traveling time and plot out small meals and food breaks every 2 to 3 hours.
4. First aid kit. You might be surprised how many people choose not to bring first aid kits while trekking; and there are also those who bring kits that are almost as good as useless. A well-stocked but compact kit can save life and limbs, not to mention protect you from mosquito bites and animal attack. Make sure also that you know what to do in case of medical emergencies. Bringing along a first aid kit while hiking is only as good as your skill in using its contents.
