Many beach bums today are into an interesting water sport known as surfing. If you visit the most popular beaches in the world, you will find many people who engage into this sport. In fact, the presence of a water sports complex in many countries proves that it has already been recognized not just as a recreation but an official sport. You may be curious enough to ask where it came from, so, let us take a look back at its past and how it came to be one of the most popular beach activities in the world.
Surfing is said to have originated from the Europeans in the year 1767. However, Polynesians were known to have observed this water sport way before the Europeans did. During that time, the chief was considered to be the most excellent wave rider and his surf board was made from the best tree present in the community. Along with the chief, the ruling class also had their own beaches where they can surf. In these shores, the lower classes were not allowed entrance. They could only enter once they became famous for riding their extremely heavy surf boards. When Scottish and German missionaries arrived in Polynesia, they discouraged many of the Polynesian traditions including surfing. Around the 20th century, it disappeared along with other practices. In ancient Hawaii, though, there was still a small lot that continuously practiced it. In fact, Hawaiian people during that time saw the art of this sport not just as a recreation but as a career. They considered it part of their culture. They called it he'e nalu or 'wave sliding'. The people of Hawaii were said to have prayed to the gods to give them the strength to pass through the ocean waves. Their priests even helped surfers in a ceremony before creating a surf board.
George Freeth was said to have brought this sport to California from Hawaii as part of a publicity stunt during the opening rites of the LA-Redondo Beach and Huntington railways while James Matthias Jordan, also known as "Big Jim," made the sport popular in Virginia Beach, Virginia when he rode on a 9 foot redwood surf board. Later on, Virginia Beach became the center for surfing in the east coast. In Australia, Duke Kahanamoku, a Hawaiian native introduced surfing in the year 1915 by demonstrating the board riding activity and some techniques in New South Wales. His board is currently displayed at the Freshwater Surf club in Sydney. With Duke's help, the sport was given more exposure to the world. It continued to progress immensely during the 20th century with the help of public information and modern innovations in terms of surf board design. The sports development and culture became centered in Hawaii, California and Australia and has only gained a small following in the 60's. When the film Gidget was released, the sport became a national fad and spawned a lot of other movies and music based on surfing. As decades went by, it continued to evolve and is now recognized as an official and professional water sport.
