A wonderfully lazy place, Tyrell Bay in the Grenadines is one of our favorite Caribbean anchorages. Cruisers from the world over are attracted to this enchanting spot. The locals are always friendly and helpful with anything you could need. Cruisers will find a well equiped boat yard with a floating repair shop and easy dockage. Ample dining, bars and fresh produce are a short walk from the beach, as well as dive shops and even a sail repair loft.
The local fishermen go out almost daily in brightly painted wooden boats. We always say hello to them and try to meet as many locals as we can. We can't wait for them to stop by Good Medicine anchored here in the harbor on their way home later with their catch.
The fisherman aboard one of those local boats, "Selassie", shouted out a hello to us late morning, and I instantly summoned them over to Good Medicine. Sueno and I never miss an opportunity to see what they have caught and check out their boat, which was beautifully painted and maintained. This time, they had been free diving for spinney lobsters. The younger man said he dives to around 100 feet or more to get them and they go around the south side to find the lobsters in the rocks!
Negotiation always comes into play when purchasing these delicious treats. The Rasta man offered the 3 pounder for $30 EC. A quick mental calculation tells us that this is a good deal. "Great, we'll take it! " As the fisherman handed the lobster over, Sueno brought out $40 EC in cash. Since this was their first sale of the day, of course they had no change. "No worries, bring the change by later!" This is usually a good policy since they may come back with more spinneys in the future. "Ya, Mon! Tanx cap! We stop by later." Dinner is set for tonight!
Sueno is now beaming as only a japanese lady can when fresh seafood is aboard. Steamed whole lobster with ponzu dipping sauce and lime, garlic rice and fresh pickled cucumber slices. Wow!
Spinneys, lobsters with no claws, are called ise-ebi in Sueno's island which means giant shrimp.
More about those lobsters...
