Home movies can practically be done by anyone today with a digital video camera recorder. With a great host of features locked in a compact gadget, shooting videos has never been easier. We have seen how this technology developed over the years and if we try to look back on the major breakthroughs and milestones in terms of film and video technology, it is very easy to see the convenience of shooting home videos today compared to earlier years. Consequently, it is also exciting to see what lies ahead for this amazing technological development in the next few years.
When the 19th century arrived and the introduction of movies that feature images in motion progressed, people became truly fascinated with the powerful capabilities of movies to entertain and tell stories. Movies were considered to be the ultimate power in documenting almost everything that happens to anybody. Making movies naturally surpassed still photography as a primary tool in recording and keeping special moments and other occasions. When the Eastman Kodak Company introduced a medium to enable its consumers to make home movies on their own, the film and movie industry also began a complex evolution of this technology that has led to the YouTube generation these years. Today, anyone can upload their own home videos or movies on the web. Starting from the introduction of cameras and projectors and nitrate film to the more successful formats like 16mm celluloid-based Kodak films, the market has become an avid supporter of home video recording and its significance in preserving special occasions and events.
In the early years of this technological innovation, only the rich and wealthy individuals can afford to buy a home movie camera. It was expensive back then to produce these gadgets and in order to reach more consumers, the industry experimented in producing cheaper film formats, which led to the production of 8mm films in the early 30's. It was also during this decade that color films were introduced to consumers, and in the following years, both 8mm and 16mm films were used to record home videos. Home movie shooting continued to be popular with the introduction of Super 8, a film that was much easier to use and also inexpensive. When television technology came, videotapes became the most affordable medium to record on. The VHS and Betamax became its competing formats in the 70's. VHS formats eventually took over and made shooting home videos easier.
When people became more familiar with making home movies, the industry set forth another revolution in digital format. The switch from tape to digital disks was fairly easy since a lot of people are already using camcorders or have seen videos made by other people. Today, thousands of moments can be captured on digital video. There is never a well-documented activity by this generation that is not preserved in detail through these videos. Many can now shoot their own movies at home and capture even the most spontaneous moments of everyday life with modern camcorders.
