For those born in the 20th century, it might not be known that surfing movies were quite popular among the youth during the 50s and the 60s. We could even compare these vintage surfing movies to the currently popular "Lives of the Elite" television shows that are multiplying like crazy these days. Today, sexy and rich bachelors are what women, both young and old, seek in the film plots and stories. Back then, the sexy surfer guy/lifesaver is the one every girl is after. It may escape everyone's knowledge but some of the most popular actors that became popular in the 60s started from doing films about surfers. The vintage version of Bay Watch, of course, is one of the most iconic television shows that has ever passed our television screens. More than the daringness, the boldness, and the distinct charm of surfing shows and movies, we may find that some of the films that had surfer leads and that dealt with the issues surfers and water-lovers encounter are actually impressive. While some surfer films of the 50s mainly showcase the typical love triangles and cheesy plots, the first surfing films and the more recent films produced about surfers and swimmers prove to have more content and quality than others.
Perhaps the first movie that started off the whole surfing culture in California, "Gidget" focuses on the adventures of a surfer names Francis Lawrence. Produced in 1957, it was probably one of the earliest surfing films to ever gain popular following and support. The 1964 documentary, "The Endless Summer", is also a film worth mentioning as it magnificently showcased the adventure of two surfers who are in search of the perfect and most awe-inspiring wave that any surfer has ever had the honor of riding. The film was heavily supported by hardcore surfers and surfing fans because every surfer, in his heart, has the desire of searching for his destined wave. Considered as the film that best presents the life of a surfer, "Big Wednesday" follows the story of three friends with extreme passion for surfing, and for life. Their big quandary, though, is their battle against their already fading youth and the responsibilities that tend to pull them all to different sides. This 60s film not only has content, but it also boasts of a skillful cinematography. The wave shots were astounding. The recent films include "Point Break" starring the iconic Keanu Reeves. The film revolves around a cop in pursuit of a group of surfers who happen to be a gang of robbers. And while the recent generation does not seem to be as interested in surfing movies as the previous generations have been, this film proved to be quite decent. And then there is the controversial documentary "The Cove" which discusses the illegal underground business in Japan which is Dolphin killing. A group of people who share the same passion for water and the aquatic beings secretly film these killings in hopes of stopping this kind of activity. The Cove may not be a straight out surfing film, but it does present a few surf fans who want to do something to save the Dolphins.
If you are an aspiring surfer and you aim to take surfing lessons soon, you could spend your free time searching for these films that might help develop your love for the sport more.
