You have just discovered surfing to be a very interesting water sport for those who are looking for a thrilling and quality way to spend your beach time. And while it may look relatively easy to stand on the surf boards and face a wave head on, the basics of surfing could prove to be a lot trickier than your average water sport. It is not an easy sport to learn, but it is, nevertheless, fun! First, though, you have to spend some bucks in buying a few important things that you are going to need as a surfer.
1. Surf Boards
For beginners, looking for the compatible surf board for you may require quite an effort. But this effort is good investment since it will be easier to learn if your surf board fits your body frame. First step is by learning the classifications of boards and their different uses. You could learn a lot by reading surf board reviews online or by asking your local surfing equipment store. The basic board for starters is the Egg or the funboard. It is normally about 8' tall with a rounded nose. For the more learned, the longboard, a 9' board which is way more difficult to control. The third type is the shortboard which can be too thin and too small for beginners to control. Since you are picking your first surf board, it is okay if it is not as flashy or as extravagant as others. Make sure the board you are going to chose has no holes and ragged edges. Try testing it on water and see if it would float. Pick something sturdy, tall, and think—something you will find easy to control. If the board is too narrow or thin, paddling may be more challenging.
2. Surf Rack
Don't forget to buy, or make, a surf rack too in order for you to be able to carry your surf board around with ease! Just attach the racks that will hold the surf board to the roof of your car, and you're set to go! Surf racks make it convenient for you to bring boards on your car. If you don't want to go around carrying the surf board during trips, save effort and get yourself one.
3. Surf Wax
Surf wax keeps your feet on the board while surfing. It is hard enough to balance and stand on a surf board, but it is harder to keep your feet glued to it and avoid being thrown out of the board by the waves. You apply surf wax on top of your board, on the surface where you stand. A thin coat should be applied to the deck, and a sticky coat. Buy a wax brush afterwards to remove previous coat for a new wax coat.
4. Wetsuits
Wetsuits protect the body from cold. Technically, that is the basic purpose of wearing wetsuits. It also makes the body more fluid with the water. The more expensive the wetsuit is, the more perks you get.
These are just some things you are going to need as a beginner. As you get along with your surfing lessons, you're going to have to need to buy more advanced equipments to match your level.
