Surfing looks fun and exciting, yes. But these are also important factors that you should first consider before you paddle your way into a 15 feet wave. For beginners, learning how to surf may be quite challenging because surfing is more likely a sport that needs a few developed skills before you perfect it. So you've already bought your surfing sack—a good and handy surf board, wetsuits, and the likes. You have also signed up for lessons and visited your local surfing school. You have also already picked out certain places on brochures and crossed out places you'd want to visit once you have already learned the proper way of handling a wave. If you think you are already as ready as you could ever be, you might want to hang on for a bit and read these few reminders that beginners should always remember!
First, you have to rate your swimming skills. If you can't even float properly in water or if you can't even swim from the edge of the pool to the other side, you might want to start taking swimming lessons first before you decide to sign up for surfing lessons. Remember that the seas, where you are planning to meet those huge waves, are not as secure as the local children's pool. The more practiced you are as a swimmer, the better. Paddling on sea may look easy, but it takes experience in swimming to be able to gain proper speed and control before you meet your wave. The sport of surfing has a few risks which include being thrown out of balance while riding a wave, and you are going to have to take a long swim back to the shore afterwards. If you aren't a good swimmer, this would be very hard for you. The fun in surfing would be replaced by the doubled effort you will have to take.
Next, keep a healthy diet and always exercise. Surfers all have nice bodies because they keep themselves fit. You are going to have to do a lot of paddling, swimming, and wave riding in surfing and you have to be physically fit to be up to this task. If you want the experience to be more enjoyable, you have to develop a strong heart too that would strengthen your endurance. Riding the waves is not as easy as it looks. Even professionals find it hard to catch a perfect one and ride on it swiftly. If you get tired easily, then surfing may not exactly be made for you. Surfers also need to develop strong immune system. They are always exposed to the water, and so they are more prone to getting colds and fever from it. If your immune system is strong, you can go practice surfing every day and not get sick immediately. Remember that surfing is a sport, and sports require the takers to be fit, strong, and healthy.
Lastly, always put your safety first. Never be reckless and always ask for assistance. You might think you are already ready to surf alone, but it is never harmful to ask guidance. Safety first, beginner!
