Riding go-karts can be a fun and exhilarating experience for kids and adults alike. While go-kart racing is relatively safe, riders still need to follow a few simple rules in order to ensure their safety. Aside from the wearing of safety gears such as helmets, gloves, racing suits, and boots; drivers need to observe driving safety and go-kart maintenance in order to have a safe driving experience.
Before racing
Before racing, one must make sure that the go-kart is in good working order and that all parts are working properly. Step on the brake pedals and make sure it is depressing properly and not sticking; check the brakes to make sure it is working. Move the steering wheel to see if the kart is stirring properly or if it needs correction. Make sure that the kart's tires have the correct pressure. It should not be under or overinflated as this can cause instability, improper braking, and can sometimes make the karts overturn.
When filling up the kart with gas
When fueling a go-kart, one must check the gas tank and make sure there are no leaks or spillage. The kart must also be far away from any fire hazard such as cigarettes or any flammable material. The engine must also be stopped before fueling. Do not fill the tank to overflowing. Ensure that the cap is closed tightly once filling is done. Move the kart at least 15 feet away from the fueling station before starting its engines.
Other safety tips
Gas powered go-karts are not advisable for use in indoor tracks since the fumes released by the vehicle's exhaust is quite poisonous and can accumulate inside the building, causing inhalation poisoning. As an alternative, electric go-karts are much better to use, even in outdoor racing when children will be the ones riding the karts since fumes released by the karts can easily affect kids.
Go-karts are not allowed in public roads and highways and must only be operated on private property or on track specifically designed for go-kart racing. Riders must also obey the specification of the go-karts. If it is only designed for one rider, only one rider should get on. No one should try to get on any part of a go-kart aside from its seat.
If you hear any unusual noise or vibration while riding the kart, you should stop the kart immediately and have the go-kart checked for any loose or worn parts. When storing go-karts, put it away in a cool, dark place away from any fire hazard. In winter, drain the gas tank to avoid the gas inside from freezing.
Read all instruction and printed manual that came along with your go-kart. If you are renting the go-kart or are just using the services of a commercial kart racing track, make sure you listen to the instructions given to you by the operators or assistants of the racing track. Above all, always wear the safety equipment provided when riding the go-karts.
