Karting or Kart racing is a type of motorsport racing wherein participants use go-karts, which is a scaled-down version of the larger vehicles used in F1 formula racing. Kart racing is considered by many to be the practice field for amateur drivers wishing to become professional drivers in motorsports. Many professional racers are in fact, products of Go-kart racing. Famous drivers like Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Räikkönen, Juan Pablo Montoya, and Jeff Gordon all got their start in Go-kart racing. Some drivers who have had a long layoff from driving, either due to an accident or from taking a break, also use kart racing as a way to get back into form.
Karting is generally accepted to have been started by Art Ingels. A race car builder, Ingels built the first ever Go-kart in California in 1956. From then on, its popularity rapidly spread around the world. Kart racing has typically three racing formats available:
Sprint – the most common format, sprint racing involves having the go-karts race around a circuit which resembles a road with left and right turns and can be as short as a quarter of a mile or as long as 1 mile. The format occurs in a series of short duration races, usually three prequalifying races with a final race to determine podium finishes. Racing normally doesn't last more than 15 minutes, with a variety of point scoring method used to determine the winners.
Endurance – endurance races are exactly what its name implies – endurance racing. It can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours or more, involving one or more drivers. In this type of racing, reliability, consistency, and pit strategy is more important than pure speed. Races are usually held in full-sized racing tracks 1.5 – 4 miles in length.
Speedway – speedway kart racing takes place on either asphalt or clay race tracks which are usually between a 1/6 or a quarter mile long, and are often oval-shaped. Races can range from 4 laps for qualifying events to 20 laps for the final event.
Besides traditional racing, go-kart racing can be used for entertainment purposes. There are many businesses which offer karts for rent. Often having either an indoor or outdoor track, these businesses offer customers not only the use of karts and their tracks but also all the safety gears needed in kart racing (helmet, gloves, driving suits, boots). Recreational kart racing often have low speed karts which are mainly for amusement rather than speed racing. This makes recreational karting safer than regular go-kart racing.
Karting as a sport is sanctioned by FIA or the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile under the name CIK-FIA (Commission Internationale de Karting). Anyone from the age of 8 and onwards can be permitted to join in kart racing. Classes for kart racing generally start at age 7 or 8 and go in 3-year age groupings until the age of 15 or 16. Karting is accepted to be the most economical form of motorsport racing available.
