With the growing cost of electricity and the threatening specter of catastrophic climate change, alternative energy systems that use renewable sources are becoming more attractive. While these systems may require a high initial capital investment, the savings you can enjoy over the life of the system can more than offset your investment. One of the most popular alternative energy systems is wind power, which is best suited for those living in rural areas which receive a lot of wind as well as those who live in distant locations not serviced by electric utilities. The heart of a wind power system is a wind turbine, which transforms kinetic energy from the wind to electricity. If you are interested in making the shift to wind power, here is a buying guide for turbines.
Before you start to shop for a wind turbine, you have to determine the total energy usage of your house. You might also consider instituting energy efficiency measures for your home to reduce usage and make your wind power system more cost-effective. And look into zoning regulations in your area, since turbines require tall towers to maximize energy production and your locality may set limits on the height of erected structures.
Then you need to decide the length of the wind turbine rotor (blades) you will buy, since this will determine the amount of electricity they will produce . Keep in mind that unlike other energy systems, you cannot readily upgrade your wind power system later to add capacity; since you cannot just add additional wind towers. For example, a turbine rotor which is around 8 feet in diameter can produce around 75 kWh per month assuming average wind speeds of 10 mph while a larger one of around 56 feet can produce as much as 5,000 kWh a month. Keep in mind, however, that wind speeds are not constant and thus, your wind energy system also will not produce electricity regularly on a year-round basis. Of course, you will also have to consider the other parts of the system, such as the wiring, the batteries to store excess power for back-up use and the inverter to convert DC from the batteries to AC for home use. Remember that a more affordable system may save you money in the short-term but may cost you more in the long run in maintenance costs.
When shopping for a wind turbine, don't look at the rated output as an indicator of how much power it can produce, since this figure can be misleading due to the various wind speeds manufacturers use to estimate output. Instead, consider figures for monthly or annual energy generation for a particular average wind speed. Look for one that produces the amount of electricity you need at the average wind speed in your area. If this information is not available , you should consider buying from a different manufacturer, since this is basic information. However, you may also be able to approximate how much electricity a turbine can generate based on the diameter of its blades and using this formula: annual energy output in kWh = 0.01328 * rotor diameter in feet squared * average wind speed in mph cubed.
