Ice hockey is a game that requires a lot of equipment to be used by all the players both for a smoother play and for the players' protection. Ice hockey is a full contact sport that makes use of equipment like hockey sticks that can easily cause harm or injury to a player. The puck for instance can often travel at speeds that are over 100 mile per hour. Imagine the hurt this can cause to a player if such puck hits him in an unprotected part of his body. Thus, it is understandable that majority of all ice hockey equipment pieces are intended to protect a player from such injuries.
The following are the most basic ice hockey equipment every hockey player should have:
1.) A helmet – Enter a hockey rink without a helmet makes you a dead man walking. As stated earlier, pucks can travel at high speeds and they can knock you out if they fly off and hit you on the head. Make sure as well that you purchase and use a helmet that snugly fits into your head. A loose fitting helmet can get easily nudged and may cover your eyes thus blacking out your vision. This can cause unwanted accidents so make it a point to use helmets that fit your head very well. Some helmets are fitted with a visor and it is best that you use one since it reduces your risk of being hurt. Most leagues, especially youth leagues require visors to be worn anyway.
2.) A hockey mask – This protects you from being hurt by flying discs of frozen rubber.
3.) Elbow pads – In hockey, you fell, you slide and you scrape the frozen ice a lot. Elbow pads are there to protect you from bruising yourself on the floor.
4.) Hockey gloves – This not only keeps you warm but save you from injuries as well.
5.) Ice hockey sticks – You can't play a game of hockey without a hockey stick, same as you can't play baseball without a bat. Hockey sticks are made from a lot of various materials. Some from wood, some from metal and others from carbon fiber. Hockey sticks also have diverse shapes and sizes. The blades as well have various lengths and breadths. The stick you choose depends on how it suits you and how comfortable you are with it.
6.) Hockey gear carrier – A hockey player has a lot of equipment to carry. From hockey sticks to pads to helmets. Thus, a gear carrier is necessary to keep your equipment organized in one place.
7.) Skates – In general, the better the fit and the lighter a pair of skates is, the easier to control and maneuver it around the hockey rink. So choose your hockey skates well. You don't want to be losing in a hockey rink just because your pair of skates is making it so hard for you to control your movement around the hockey rink.
Other ice hockey equipment include shin guards, jock strap, hockey pants, shoulder pads, mouth guards, neck guards, skate guards, and throat protectors.
