Ice hockey is a team sport played on an ice surface wherein ice skaters use hockey sticks to guide and drive a puck towards a goal. It is a game that requires both physical and mental toughness. Since it can only be played over ice, it is most popular in countries where it's reliably cold and where there's ice cover during some seasons of the year like Canada, the United States, and a lot of European nations such as Switzerland and the Czech Republic. It is is in fact Canada's national winter sport.
Ice hockey is said to have originated in Canada during the early 1800's. Immigrants and English soldiers based in Canada used to play stick and ball games outdoors on the ice. These outdoors sports they played were heavily influenced by the games of the local inhabitants and tribes of early Canada. These soon developed and evolved into a game that includes skates, sticks and pucks. The development of modern ice hockey as we know it today started in Montreal, where the rules of the game began to be established and hockey clubs played against each other.
Professional ice hockey leagues started sprouting out during the early 19000's. The Western Pennsylvania Hockey League was formed first followed by the International Professional Hockey League. By these times, hockey players started being treated as professionals and being paid to play. A decade later, the National Hockey Association was organized in 1910. NHA went on to change some of the guidelines and rules of the game. In 1917, NHA was renamed the National Hockey League. Ice hockey, by this time had become an immensely popular sport. Professional ice hockey leagues soon started being formed in both the United States and Europe.
Most of the equipment used in ice hockey, aside from the sticks and pucks, are for protection purposes. Ice hockey is a very physical sport and injuries occurring on the rink aren't an uncommon thing. Therefore, hockey comes with a bunch of protective equipment like helmets, shoulder and elbow pads, mouth guards, gloves, hockey pants, ice skates and neck guards. The goalie makes use of extra gear like blockers, catch gloves, leg protectors, and chest pads.
A hockey team is normally made up of 20 players although 6 players including the goaltender are allowed on the rink during normal play. All players are wearing ice skates. The game is played on an ice surface referred to as a hockey rink by two opposing teams. The main objective of the game is simple and that is to direct and drive a puck into the opposing team's goal net. To control and guide the puck, hockey sticks are used by all the players. Players though may use any part of their bodies to guide the puck as long as they adhere to established guidelines and restrictions. For instance, players aren't allowed to hold a puck nor transfer it to their teammates using their hands.
An ice hockey game starts when players from both teams meet at the center of the rink. The referee then drops a puck onto the ice between them, and this signals the players to start playing and gain possession of the puck. A game usually lasts for one hour divided into three 20-minute periods.
