The first stage in the development of ice hockey started in Montreal, Canada. In March 3, 1875, the first hockey game was pre-arranged in the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal. The first indoor hockey game was conducted by a group of students from the McGill University. The nine-player teams were separated into two and made use of a puck throughout the 60-minute game. Several McGill students provided a set of rules in playing ice hockey on indoor areas. The students were Richard Smith, Henry Joseph, W.L Murray, W.F Robertson and James Creighton. The rules were said to be based from the traditional rules of field hockey during the early 1800's. In 1877, the McGill University Hockey Club was founded followed by the association of "The Montreal Victorias" in 1881.
The first indoor ice hockey championship game was featured worldwide during the Montreal Winter Carnival in 1883. The McGill hockey team bagged the championship trophy which was famously known as the "Winter Carnival Cup". In the same year, the number of players from two teams was reduced from nine to seven and the hockey games were rearranged into 30-minute quarters or halves. The positions of the players were also rearranged and classified under various names such as point, goalkeeper, cover point, rover, center, left and right wing. In 1885, the Montreal Hockey League (MHL) was recognized and provided opportunities for young male students in Montreal. In 1886, the various competing teams from the Winter Carnival founded the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada (AHAC). The AHAC featured regular seasons of hockey games for amateur players.
In England, the Oxford Hockey Club was founded by a group of students from Oxford University in 1885. The first ice hockey championship game in Europe was held at the Annual Hockey Varsity Match in Switzerland. The championship trophy was given to the Oxford hockey team after defeating the rival team from Cambridge University in a 6-0 score. The newly voted Canadian Governor-General Lord Stanley of Preston attended the Winter Carnival 1888. Stanley was impressed on the impact of the game among Canadians. In 1892, Stanley adapted the use of a decorative bowl to recognize the winning teams from the Winter Carnival events. The bowl became the official trophy of the national hockey tournament around the world. Stanley's son Arthur established the Ontario Hockey Association. Stanley's daughter Isobel was the first female hockey player.
In the early 1900's, the National Hockey Association (NHA) was formed. The NHA re-organized the set of standards in playing hockey. In 1917, the National Hockey League (NHL) was founded. The NHL was brought to the United States in 1924. Specialized hockey leagues for men and women started to develop in Europe through the launch of the Swiss National League in 1916. There are currently four top leagues in Europe which includes Sweden's "Elitserien", Finland's "SM Liiga" and the "Kontinental Hockey League".
