The women's ice hockey was integrated in the roster of medal sports during the 1998 Winter Olympic games held in Japan. The US team won the gold medal while Canada won silver medals. The hockey team from Finland won bronze medals. Abigail Hoffman became the first gold medalist in the women's hockey team during the "Commonwealth Games" held in 1966. Hoffman was able to play for the St. Catharines Tee Pees by cutting her hair short and pretending as a man throughout the game. Hoffman's boyish figure became controversial and was criticized by sports critics around the world. The Ontario Supreme Court decided prohibit Hoffman from participating in all ice hockey competitions.
The city of Ontario has the largest number of female population who are playing ice hockey. According to statistics on the number of female athletes conducted by the Ontario government, there are 31,000 female hockey players from the different hockey leagues in the city since 2003. Half of the 31,000 players became part of about 2,000 teams. In 1993, Ontario had only 7,000 female hockey players from 557 different teams and leagues.
The first women's hockey championship tournament was founded by the International Hockey Federation (IHF) in April 1987. The Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) hosted the said tournament. The championship games was participated by different representatives worldwide and launched the careers of many female hockey players from Ontario. The first women's hockey tournament hosted by IHF was held in Ottawa during the 1990's. The women's ice hockey was officially included in the 1998 Atlanta Olympic games.
Lady Isobel Stanley was the first female hockey player. Lady Isobel pioneered the hockey game for women by being the first female hockey player to use sticks and pucks during the 1800's. Her first hockey game was held at the ice skating rink of Rideau Hall in Ottawa. In 1920, Lady Isobel Meredith of Montreal launched the "Lady Meredith Cup". The tournament featured female hockey players wearing skirts. Lady Meredith's cousin H. Montagu Allan launched the "Allan Cup" for amateur male hockey players in 1908. Elizabeth Graham was the first female hockey player to wear a protective mask in 1927. Graham's use of the mask in hockey championship tournaments was regularly featured in the "Montreal Daily Star". Critics accused Graham of wearing a "Fencing Mask". Speculations were also attacked against Graham's credibility in wearing a protective mask during championship hockey games.
