The ice hockey is one of the most popular sports in America and Canada today. Also simply known as "Hockey" in many North American territories, the game is a team sport that is played primarily on ice. Throughout the game, the players make use of sticks to directly hit the puck and make it go through the opposing team's goal. Many sports analysts and critics coined the game as a form of fast-paced team sport. Ice hockey is usually played in places with winter seasons such as Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. The game is considered as Canada's official winter sport.
The ice hockey was invented in Canada in the early 1800's. The game was first developed as a form of "stick and ball" game that was played in open-air areas for recreation during that time. The "Mi'kmaq" of Nova Scotia introduced the stick and ball game to other first-world countries such as the United Kingdom. The Mi'kmaq developed the use of the sticks to puck the opponent in winter sports. In 1799, England gave the name "Hockey". During the pre-Christian years, Ireland adapted the game and became well-known as "Hurling" in many Scottish areas. The game was also called as "Bandie Ball" or "Field Hockey" in England. The European immigrants in Canada adapted the game when being played under frozen conditions. In 1894, The "Legends of the Micmacs" was created to carry out an in-depth study on the traditional use of sticks in ball games during the Mi'kmaq's "First Nation" development in Eastern Canada. According to Silas Rand, the game was called as "Wolchamaadijik" or European ball game played with ancient sticks called "Hurleys".
John Franklin wrote in his 1825 article that winter sports such as ice hockey was called as the "Morning Sport" during his expedition on the Great Bear Lake. In 1843, An English army officer living in Ontario wrote an article in "The Boston Evening Gazette" about the progress of the game in England and other European countries where winter season usually occurs. In 1859, the game was introduced in Halifax. Thomas Haliburton published a book about the impact of the game to male teenagers in 1844. The book was entitled "The Attache: Second Series". The book generally focused on Haliburton's study on the modernization of hockey games worldwide. According to Haliburton's writings, the game started to develop in Windsor, Nova Scotia by a group of male students from the King's College.
The National Hockey League (NHL) is one of the high-flying hockey leagues for men while the Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL) serves as the female counterpart of NHL. According to International Hockey Federation (IHF), 162 medals were taken by seven countries during the IHF World Championships. The countries include Sweden, Russia, Canada and US. 64 medals were awarded during the 1920 Olympic Games for the men's division hockey in seven countries respectively.
