Protein: The Muscle Builder
Protein is the most essential component of bodybuilding supplements. In fact, there are supplements of mostly protein content. They are in the form of energy drinks, milkshakes and "pudding." They are usually taken before and after gym training or daily exercises.
Whey protein from milk has the highest concentration of cysteine. This is an amino acid that aids in the body's natural production of glutathione. Glutathione is an antioxidant that helps in the recuperation or repair of muscle tissues during rest. Whey is also rich in essential amino acids and branched-chain amino acids.
Supplementary proteins are also derived from soybean, egg white, hemp seed and other fatty acids.
Meal Replacement Products (MRPs)
Several brands of bodybuilding supplements manufacture meal replacement drinks and bars. They are designed to fully replace meals, since they have easily absorbable nutrients, low cholesterol and virtually zero harmful fat.
The main source of carbohydrates from MRPs are oat fibers, maltodextrin and brown rice. Many edible bars have whole grains as their base ingredient. This way, they are able to add dietary fibers to on-the-go meals. These are also loaded with anti-oxidants like Vitamin C and Vitamin E. However, dieticians do not recommend to fully substitute your daily meals with MRPs.
Coenzyme Q10: Keeping the Muscles Alive
More commonly known as CoQ10, this enzyme is one of the special bodybuilding supplements. This substance is found in both the skeletal and non-skeletal muscles, which act as antioxidizing agent for the muscle tissues. CoQ10 prevents the oxidation of muscle cells; hence, they prevent death and pain of the body's muscles.
If the gym trainee has enough CoQ10 in the body, he will become more resistant to pain and strain. It can also prevent the build up of lactic acid, which can result to cramps and severe aching. The enzyme is also important to keep the heart, lungs and kidneys at optimal performance. After all, these essential organs are mostly made up of muscle tissues. The coenzyme can also lower the risks of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
Control of Supplement Intake
Supplements are different from steroids. Steroids deliberately modify the endocrinal system of the body—disrupting its natural function and health conditions. However, excessive intake of supplements can also be harmful. Consult your instructor and doctor on the proper amount and frequency of intake of supplements. Do not just use any prohormone, testosteron booster or coenzyme formulas without clinical approval.
For example, taking too much of protein is inefficient since the digestive system can only process about 9 grams of protein per hour. Excess protein may result in weight gain, kidney disorders and diarrhea. Drugs which contain Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) has negative side effects too. It may cause headaches, nausea, chest pain and other allergic reactions.
Also remember that bodybuilding supplements are not enough to achieve the perfect body. The gym trainee also needs adequate rest and sleep. All the protein intake will be useless if the body will not be given proper rest. Muscle cells use protein to repair and add bulk while the person is sleeping.
