If you've ever lived in the country, then the thought of taking up landscape photography to capture the beauty of the scenery must have occurred to you at one time or another. You must have also believed that landscape photography would be than portraiture, since it involves essentially taking pictures of basically static │stationary objects. However, once you've tried it, you'll realize that taking pictures of landscapes poses its own set of challenges that you'll have to master if you want to create truly photographs.
First, you should understand that "landscapes" does not mean just natural settings but encompasses all sorts of landscapes, including urban landscapes and seascapes and not just in fair weather and clear light but in any kind of climate or ambient light. Second, good landscape photography does not involve simply what you see through your viewfinder at the time, but sometimes involves waiting for the right light at a time of day or composing the right of elements to perfectly the mood and image that you want. Third, unlike most other types of photography, where you use light cameras that allow you to shoot on the spur of the moment, serious photographers use tripods to help them capture │take long exposure shots, and you'll have to carry around several │various types of lenses and filters as well. In short, photographing landscapes is not as as it seems.
There are three generally styles of landscape photography: representational, impressionistic and abstract. Representational is probably the type of photography you'll with. It involves simply photographing the landscape as you see it at the time, with minimal │little, if any, manipulation of the image. You're simply taking a picture of what you see. On the other hand, an impressionistic picture may seem at first glance like a representational photo, but a closer look would reveal that the image has been manipulated to emphasize │highlight certain elements, with the intention of presenting a reality or even unreality. Abstract photos, however, break away from any kind of representational visual values entirely, totally manipulating the various elements of the landscape to produce │create the desired composition that focuses more on form and shape. To achieve this abstract composition, techniques such as extreme close ups or underexposure during the developing phase to create silhouettes can be used. Most beginning photographers start out with representational photographers, then move into impressionistic or abstract photos are they become more skilled and their interests deepen.
Mastering landscape photography also involves mastering the elements of composition. For example, unless you want your photographs to look "flat" you want to balance the foreground and the background to give the picture some depth. For example, if you're photographing a mountain, if you want to give some idea of how big it is, you should include some object in the foreground such as a tree to give a sense visually of how vast the mountain really is. You can take formal classes to learn about the basics of photography and composition, or you can teach yourself by reading photography books and taking a lot of photographs, experimenting and things until you find your own particular │individual style.
