To hold a successful backyard barbecue grilling or a simple barbecue party, one has to plan in detail and well in advance. Planning the number of guests you'd like to invite, as well as the dishes you're going to cook takes time and a bit of effort. Preparing the invitations (if you're going to send out any) or just simply making a list of persons to call needs to be done before you start announcing that you're going to hold a barbecue party in your backyard.
Once you have decided who you will invite, you can then start planning your menu and activities. If there are children invited, you would do well to include child-friendly food such as chips, hotdogs, and small hamburgers. For adults, you can include all the traditional food cooked in a barbecue fest such as pork, chicken, sausages, and hamburgers. Other great barbecue food includes steak, ribs, corn on the cob, and tri-tips. You may also think of including side dishes such as potatoes (or potato salad), baked beans, and coleslaw. You should also have a bowl of onions, a jar of pickles, and relish just in case someone asks for them. If you have a guest who is a vegetarian, it's a good idea to prepare some soy-based burgers for them.
For beverages, keep at least a full-stocked cooler with assorted beverages: sodas for the kids, and beer or wine for the adults. You can also prepare fruit juices and a pitcher of cold water for those who are avoiding carbonated drinks.
Try to schedule the party on a sunny, clear day. It's a party-pooper if for some reason it starts to rain. Get ready with a back-up plan if it does indeed rain despite predictions of good weather.
Days before the party is expected to start, you should have at least finished preparing the decorations you're going to use as well as the food you're going to cook. If there is meat that needs to be marinated, it should be already marinated, chicken and slices of meat should already be cut up and ready to be grilled.
On the day of the party itself, wake up early to prepare the venue and the food to be cooked. Make sure to keep the grill going and ready before the guests even arrive. It would be better if you already have some barbecued food going and ready to serve the moment guests start to arrive. Once the party gets going, you can start playing music and having games. A successful backyard barbecue grilling isn't without it's assortment of fun and games. You can bring out a Frisbee for a game of catch or a football for a game of touch football. For kids, you can give them squirt guns to play with or potato sacks to play a game of sack race. For group games you can play tug-of-war or volleyball.
With the right mix of good food, music, and entertainment, your backyard barbecue grilling can be a rousing success.
