"Boizu Rabu" or Boys Love is a two-part Japanese gay film directed by critically-acclaimed filmmaker Kotaro Terauchi. The first installment of the film was released in DVD format on November 2006 while the second installment had its exclusive screening in Japanese theatres. The film was adapted from the popular manga series of the same name. The film stars Yoshikazu Tokami and Atsumi Kanno.
The first installment of Boys Love tells the love story of a magazine editor named Taishin Mamiya and a young handsome model named Noeru Kisaragi. The plot revolves around Taishin's encounter with Noeru during an interview for his magazine feature. Taishin audaciously interviews Noeru personally despite his bad attitude in treating the people around him. Noeru draws a picture of an ocean as a response for Taishin's offer to go out for a dinner. Taishin however, became assured over Noeru's feelings while they were eating at a fancy restaurant. After the unforgettable dinner date, Noeru and Taishin had intimate sex in the bathroom. The morning after the two men had sex, Noeru called the magazine's office and accused Taishin for sexually seducing him. Taishin visits Noeru's house to apologize personally for his sexual actions. Taishin soon discovers that Noeru is secretly attracted to his profession.
The second installment of Boys Love tells the love story of a teacher and a student from a prestigious school in Japan. The story revolves around a teacher named Kairo Aoi who fell in love with one of his students named "Sora". Kairo and Sora keeps their relationship a secret to stay away from gossips from the school. Kairo discovers Sora's dark past and tries to help him let go of it. In 2009, the film's production team decided to release the DVD version of the film which they named "Schoolboy Crush".
US-based Film and Technology blogger Don Willmott wrote a review about the film in his blogsite. Willmott described the Japanese gay film as a narrative of romantic encounters between typical Asian men. According to Willmott, Terauchi meticulously adapted the scenes to symbolize the nature of romance based from literary works of Hemingway and Shakespeare. Willmott also explained in his blog that the film provides an intriguing standpoint in gay relationships under the conservative society. Willmott compared the film to "Fatal Attraction". Lawrence Ferber of the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival praised the film for it's deep interpretation of homosexual relationships from an old-fashioned society. According to the "Oasis Magazine" website, the film provided a subtle narrative of sensuality involving two men. The website's blogger Jeff Walsh described the film as an Asian masterpiece which also tells a story that is beyond the concept of homosexuality. The film gained positive reviews from many film critics around the world. The Boys Love movies gained critical receptions and recognitions from many gay and lesbian film award giving bodies around the world.
