The film was inspired from the 1967 song entitled "Happy Together" by The Turtles. The film tells the story of a complicated romantic affair between two men. Happy Together gained upbeat reviews from different international film festivals. Wong won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997. The San Francisco Chronicle gave the film high ratings. According to correspondent Edward Guthmann, Wong brought lavishes with ease throughout the film's cinematography and became one of the best Asian films directed by an innovative director. The New York Times praised the film for its heartfelt storyline. Jonathan Rosenbaum of "The Chicago Reader" gave Happy Together a mix of positive and negative reviews. Rosenbaum criticized the film's vague plot and Wong's directorial effort. The "Box Office Magazine" also criticized the film for its mediocre concept and lack of narrative.
