What makes gay movies great? The same reasons non-gay movies are great: great acting, excellent directing, good writing, and plenty of entertainment and philosophical fodder to chew on. Here are some of the best gay movies ever made:

1. Brokeback Mountain – arguably the most recallable gay movie, being the most recent, Brokeback Mountain is also considered by many gays as THE gay movie of the century. Starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in one of their most difficult roles ever, Brokeback Mountain got rave reviews and critical acclaim, and was only edged out by the movie Crash in the Oscar Awards. It became so popular that the term "brokeback" has been immersed in pop culture as meaning "gay" or having homosexual connotation.

2. Beautiful Thing – a UK film produced in 1996, Beautiful Thing was the story of a gay teen falling in love with a jock that turns out to be gay. The movie, based on Jonathan Harvey's stage play, was originally intended for television, but was so successful the producers opted to give it a theatrical release.

3. Shelter – Shelter is an indie film that was released quietly in the spring of 2007 with a TV debut a month later in the subscription channel, Only Here! that quickly exploded into the gay scene as one of the best gay movies of the year. Starring Brad Rowe and Trevor Wright, Shelter is a story about first gay love, and about family obligations and connections. The movie succeeds despite the absence of many of the stereotypical elements present in most gay movies such as AIDS, gay bars, drag queens, gay bashings, and homophobia.

4. Latter Days – perhaps one of the more controversial gay movies ever made, Latter Days is the story of a closet gay Mormon missionary, and his openly gay neighbor falling in love with each other. The film enjoyed critical success especially at film festivals but was dogged by protests and threats of boycotts in its commercial release.

5. Maurice – is a film adaptation of E.M Forster's novel of the same title. The book was published posthumously in 1971 since Forster feared it would be very controversial if it was published in his lifetime. The film was produced in 1987 and instantly became a hit classic. Some still consider the nude bedroom scene of the movie as the most identifiable scene in a gay movie ever.

6. Trick – one of the few gay romantic comedy films ever made, Trick is not much about finding where to have sex as it is about finding love. Starring Christian Campbell and John Paul Pitoc, Trick features a fun and witty take to homosexuality.

7. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – this movie came in the heels of a decade of AIDS devastation and was marked as one of the most important gay movies of its decade. This movie became an instant classic with its dance numbers, and the music of ABBA, as well as reigniting a whole new phenomenon that the gay community desperately needed.
