Yaoi anime is a genre of anime wherein the story focuses on homosexual relationships between two males. While the general themes involve openly gay themes, Yaoi is distinctly marketed to a female audience. Characters are often portrayed as having androgynous features, often unidentifiable as either male or female. Drawings of male lead characters are often bishonen in nature. Bishonen in Japanese literally means beautiful boy.
The pairings in Yaoi anime often involve an aggressor, known as seme, and a receiver, known as uke. The seme are the ones depicted as traditional males and are often shown as figures with a masculine build, manly features, and stronger physique. Ukes on the other hand are shown as the weaker of the two and have a much smaller build, with feminine features and often an undistinguishable face from that of a female's. Sexual content is often implicit in these shows, with the manga equivalent often showing sexual acts or even of anal sex.
Themes in these stories revolve around resolving sexual tension between the two protagonists, conquering fears or apprehension of love or of homosexuality in general, acceptance of each other no matter what or a "love conquers all" theme. Yaoi anime in general is said to be a romance story, with elements of homoeroticism used only as a vehicle to convey the unconscious desire of the female reader to idealize relationships with males as something coming close to Yaoi relationships.
Gay viewers of Yaoi anime has increased in recent years, prompting the development of a shoot-off genre called Bara or gay manga. Gei comi or Bara is also sometimes called as Men's Love or Menzu Rabu. A rather small niche, Bara is serialized in gay men's magazines. Access outside Japan is limited as none has been licensed for distribution in English, with very few titles being scanlated.
While Yaoi protagonists or leads in general are cleanly divided between top and bottom roles or masculine and feminine roles, some anime do feature a rather less distinguishable role between the two, with some anime even allowing for switches or riba in sexual roles. Content in the anime can range from sweet and innocent to very graphic and mature in nature. There will be scenes showing simple or chaste kisses and there will be scenes depicting very graphic sexual acts such as anal sex. A viewer should always check an anime's rating before watching it if they are concerned over content. Most of these animes are material developed from the original mangas, and often follow the same storylines as the manga (though some minor changes may occur in some cases). Sometimes a Yaoi OVA (Original Video Animation) will be released before a TV series is licensed or began.
Distinction between Yaoi anime and anime with only elements of homoeroticism or homosexual romance should be categorically made as Yaoi exclusively focuses on this relationship while an anime with some elements of homosexual relationship may only feature such element as a side story.
Some of the more popular Yaoi anime include Sensitive Pornograph, Ai No Kusabi, FAKE, Haru Wo Daiteita, Kizuna, and Boku No Sexual Harassment.
