The Yaoi is a famous Japanese expression for "Boys' Love (BL)". The Yaoi has been primarily used to deal on topics about homo-romantic and homo-erotic relationships between two young Japanese men. The Manga are usually produced by Japanese female artists. The main characters in the imaginary medium typically comprises with the formula of "Seme (Attacker)" pursuing the "Uke" or "Receiver". The existence of the Yaoi started during the development of the "Shonen-Ai" medium in the 1970's up to late 1980's. The medium were originally labeled as parodies of famous traditional Manga artworks from the "Dojinshi Market". The creators of the BL distinguish the fictional genre from the "Bara" or Manga created by gay artists for the gay men. Some BL creators created the "Yuri" which is said to be the female counterpart of the BL. The Yuri features romantic stories involving lesbians and female bisexuals.
The Yaoi gained critical attention from other countries during the start of the 21st century. Federick Schodt criticized the visual impact of the male sensuality portrayed in the BL. According the Schodt, the popularity of the BL among female audience serves as an additional room for imaginative bisexual or effeminate themes being presented under the "Shojo Manga" phenomenon. Many Japanese art critics observed that the impact of BL to females allows them to take away the idea of sexuality from their bodies. Manga critic Kazuko Suzuki describes the BL Manga as a medium created to allow the female population in disliking the concept of machismo or male heterosexism ideas in establishing relationships. The BL has also been compared to English-language romantic novels of the early 20th century. A Japanese science fiction writer named Mariko Ohara compared the popularity of the BL Manga in "Lesbian Pornograhy". Ohara wrote a homosexual fiction entitled "Kirk/Spock" during her teenage years to explain homosexual pornography in a conventional approach. Manga commentator Shihomi Sakakibara arguably explained that many avid BL fans are said to be oriented with homosexual and transsexual activities. Sakakibara however, suggested that political issues concerning gender must also be featured in BL Manga. According to international Manga critic Sandra Buckley, the narratives presented in the BL Manga are works of imaginative differentiation of gender issues and societal expectations.
Many Gay and Lesbian commentators from around the world criticized the gay issues and narrative portrayed in many BL Manga. In May 1992, Japanese gay rights activist Masaki Sato criticized the BL artists and fans. Sato wrote in an open letter that the BL creators are promoting the Manga to discriminate the educated and professional gay men in society. Sato also wrote in the letter that the BL Manga only aims to portray homosexuals as sensual fantasies and not as acknowledged individuals in society. Sato called for a debate on BL which started in 1992 and ended in 1997. Sato continued to protest against the BL Manga.
