The German Shepherd is one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They can be great companions however if they are neglected or spoiled they can develop annoying tendencies. Did you know that this breed has more recorded bitings than any other dog? It is in your interests as a dog owner to know the best ways of training German Shepherd dogs and puppies and that your dog doesn't cause any problems in public.
Getting a German Shepherd puppy the right way will be highly beneficial for your pet, family and house visitors. You should avoid all the common German Shepherd problems such as biting and barking. Taking your Alsation out will also be less stressful. The most important training activity for a new puppy is toilet training. Your dog will normally want to "go" after meals so be prepared. When you start off the puppy will need to be carried outside to his litter area. Within a week or two your dog will go outside of his own accord. Socializing your dog is an essential activity. Your GSD puppy needs to become used to the everyday sounds in your house, along with all the family members.
You should start obedience training on a young or mature dog. It is key that German Shepherds be well trained so they are not a danger or nuisance to themselves or others. The German Shepherd breed is a very trainable and useful animal. It's no accident the GSDs excel as working dogs helping the police and rescue services. When training your GSD there are three commands he needs to learn. The "Sit" command is the first lesson. Stand in front of your dog and say "sit" while at the same time pushing his back down gently so that he knows what you mean. GSD's respond best to a reward when they comply. When he obeys, praise him well. The other two most important commands are the "Stay" and "Come/Recall" commands. Good training not only makes your dog more socially acceptable but could also save its life. Sometimes dogs can put themselves in dangerous situations and you need to be able to stop your dog in his tracks if necessary. When you are out exercising your German Shepherd you will often use the "Come" command to get your dog to follow your lead. Sometimes around the house you will require him to come to you perhaps if you have a visitor or he is barking too loudly.
