What is generic Viagra?
Generic Viagra are generic versions of the brand name drug Viagra. These are drugs which contain the same chemical, sildenafil citrate, as Viagra. Dosage, efficacy, and content are all the same except generic Viagra is less expensive than its brand-name counterpart. If you buy generic Viagra, you save almost 5 times! 20 doses of Viagra costs about $125 to $200 but generic Viagra costs only $200 for more than 100 doses.
As most doctors can tell you, there is no difference between taking generic medicines and brand name medicines – except for the price that you pay for it. Brand name medicines are expensive because the price is marked up to cover for the cost of research and development the drug took. Generic medicines don't have this disadvantage since the cost of developing the drug has already been borne by another pharmaceutical company. All the other company has to do is to replicate the process and they can manufacture a cheaper version of the same drug. Of course the original maker of the drug will have patents submitted which prevents other companies from manufacturing the same drug unless the drug expires.
When does Pfizer's patent to Viagra expire?
In some countries like Brazil, people can already buy generic Viagra as early as June of this year. This is because of a ruling made by the Supreme Court of Brazil saying that Pfizer's patent of the drug began when the company first filed it in June of 1990 as opposed to Pfizer's claim that the drug's patent was only finalized in 1991.
Mechanism of action
Sildenafil citrate works by blocking PDE5, an enzyme responsible for reducing the production of another substance in the body, cyclic guanosine monophosphate which in turn increases blood flow by relaxing the body's smooth muscles. Relaxed vascular smooth muscles lead to enlarging of blood vessels which results in increased blood flow to the penis – hence and erection.
Dosage of the drug
Sildenafil can be taken in 25, 50, to 100 milligram tablets. It should be taken only once per day between 30 minutes to 4 hours before sexual intercourse.
Side-effects and contraindication of the drug
Common side-effects of the drug include: headaches, colds, dyspepsia, some form of flushing or reddening of the face, and eye impairments such as blurred vision, loss of peripheral vision, and cyanopsia. Rarer side-effects may happen such as severe hypotension, heart attack, stroke, hearing loss, and priapism. Priapism is a condition wherein the penis does not return or become flaccid again after the presence of physical stimulation has been removed or after sexual intercourse has been finished.
If you plan to buy generic Viagra, you should consult your doctor as some substances cannot be taken together with sildenafil citrate. These substances include nitric oxide or organic nitrates such as nitroglycerine, sodium nitroprusside, amyl nitrates or more commonly known as "poppers." Those taking protease inhibitors for the treatment of HIV should also inform their doctors since protease inhibitors can severely increase the duration and severity of the side-effects.
